Dear PoPville,

Just this week… on the 2200 block of Champlain Street NW in Adams Morgan… Us five neighbors got together and did a color coordinated collective effort of painting our otherwise simple rowhouses. Beforehand 1/2 the rowhouses were bare and the other half painted boring colors. And they were overpowered by two big bookend condo buildings.

It took a few iterations of color choices and some of the nearby neighbors helped with choices. Heed our advice, color chips look different than entire painted houses. Buy a 6oz sample and try a block of color before you commit to the gallons. We also found a few blocks where we liked the series of colors and called the owners for their color names. Everyone was m

Ultimately we are all now very proud of what was otherwise a boring and simple block of rowhouses turning into a collective effort to get some real curb appeal

Each house took 3 gallons of Behr Premium Plus Ultra Exterior Satin and we shared 3 gallons of Exterior White Satin for the trim.

Awesome!

What a huge improvement! Big props for getting your neighbors to work together.

    Agreed – love it!

(the blue is my favorite :) )

Very nice! I like the decision to not paint the roof access/deck area on the green house, which I think could detract from the cohesiveness you all achieved.

  • Chops

What a great story – good for you!

I was amazed at the difference. Good show to all!

  • ah

Nice work, particularly on getting all the neighbors together on doing this. That was probably a bigger challenge than getting the colors right.

    • Yes indeed. It wasnt as tough as you’d think. We started with a photo of some rowhouses on 1337 11th Street and then just adjusted to match our block… We tried to accentuates our interesting brick work too.

        copycats…..

  • And major props to our painter (see him in before photo) Jimmy Begazo. Call him does he great work at super reasonable prices (301) 712-4588.

Jimmy Painted my house in Petwworth. He did a GREAT job and I will use him again for sure !!!

  • JS

Thanks for writing in. I was walking by with my bf the other night and I couldn’t imagine why painters were painting multiple houses at once. All I could think was ‘no one paints all the adjoining houses together.’ I was wrong, you guys are stellar.

  • Ivy City Mayor

    EPIC!

What a great example to set! Love to see this sort of thing spread…

Very nice! This is what makes a neighborhood special: working together with your neighbors to add some color to the street. Congratulations!

Love this idea! Reminds me of Rainbow Row in Charleston, SC. Brings a bright fresh feel to these rowhouses

  • hma

Awesome. Reminds me of Cliffbourne Pl.

  • JB

Really does look great! I love to see this — good work guys!

Agree with everyone – great job! Reminds me of Seaton St. or Cliffborne Pl. It also shows how much of a difference painting the “eyebrow” trim over the windows makes.

  • Agreed – live down the street and saw it go up. Thought it was the same owner for all five places or something. Nice work! What color was the last house being painted? Can’t tell from the photo.

  • Sidney Thompson

Super! What a difference! Love the change!

  • SF

Looks really nice. Did the painter prime first? If not, these things are going to peel like crazy.

  • Hello Goodbye

Love it! Great job to you and your neighbors.

  • This made my day! Decorate the world!

The car on the left, next to the light pole, was not moved an inch during the whole process.

Except the vehicle in the “after” picture is a Subaru and the vehicle in the same spot in the “before” picture is a Nissan.

    Love it!

  • Stunning convergence of civic pride and economic self-interest. Neighborhood beautification at its best. Kudos!!!!

    That’s awesome!!

  • STELAR!

  • Gladys Cravitz

    hey, wait a minute! …. that’s my house… I didn’t authorize anyone to ……….

Ok guys, these houses look amazing and give such a glaze to the neighborhood, we agree. Yet, you should see what Jimmy was capable to do in our just bought brand-new apartment! He helped us choose the paint, the design and create a glamorous cozy atmosphere out of a quite dark and quite boring apartment, whose charm had been sapiently hidden by the previous designers! We strongly recommend Jimmy’s services: he is fast, hardworking, precise and neat, and deliver in an impeccable condition. Great value for money. Cheers, Francesca & Max.

I live on the same block and love the new look of these row houses. Perhaps even more, I love the way the neighbors worked together to achieve the fantastic visual uplift to the street. Great job, Eric and the other folks!
