“Dear PoP,

Next month Georgetown’s Big Planet Comics is moving from its long-time location on Dumbarton Avenue to 1520 U Street.

Plans call for the new shop to open on Wednesday (a.k.a. New Comic Day), September 28.”

I called the store and they confirmed they’ll be moving from Georgetown to 1520 U St, NW on Sept. 28th. They’ll be located between G Books and Legendary Beast in the former Shoefly space on the first floor.

Shoefly closed?! When did that happen? I hope there aren’t plans to close up their Clarendon non-sale-outlet store…

I wonder if this had anything to do with the super stern guy that worked there and his penchant for making customers uncomfortable.

interesting choice to move to the same neighborhood where another comic shop couldn’t survive.

This is great news! Big Plant Comics is a wonderful institution and the owner is a real stand up guy. He used to let me read comics for hours without buying much when I was just a little kid. Best of Luck on U street!

    Shoe Fly closed?? Sorrow.

True, but Big Monkey didn’t have the infrastructure that Big Planet has (other stores, longer pedigree), and, to be honest, Big Monkey definitely had that Android’s Dungeon feel. Big Planet isn’t as super-hero-centric.

Agreed. I know some of the staff was very nice, but Big Planet and (despite the name) Big Monkey were two very different beasts. Big Planet has much more of a bookstore feel and is better at catering towards those not already heavily invested in the format.

  • Hey All –
The ShoeFly store in Clarendon is open and still rocking. We had mixed feelings about not renewing our lease in DC. We are happy to see such a cool shop replace us in that space! See you online or in Clarendon…<3
