“Dear PoPville,
I don’t have A/C in my car and basically have been stuck to early morning or night driving to cope! I would like to rent a car for a couple of weeks to use locally and possibly take a 3 hour (or so) road trip out of town preferably as a reprieve from this heat.
Hoping someone out there can give me some advice about finding a cheap, reliable rental. The smaller the car, the better…save me some gas and hopefully do a tad bit less environmental damage.”

This home is located at 711 Shepherd St, NW:
The flier says:
“A gem at the Petworth Metro! Quality restoration – 4 BR, 3.5 bath, 3 level home. Kit w/ custom cabs, granite, SS Energy Star appls, & wine rack. Powder rm on main. Fully fin LL suite w/ W/ D hookup. Rear deck, huge terraced yard, 2-car OSP. “Green” features throughout, dual flush and water saving bath fixtures, custom closet inserts, some original components preserved w/ upgrades to systems.”
You can find more info here and photos here.
$599,000 sound right for this 4 bed/3.5 bath?
Ed. Note: A 4 bed/3.5 bath just went under contract a block away at 723 Taylor St, NW (asking $599,000)

We took a look at Loeb’s back in Apr. ’09. They’ve reopened at their new location after a move back in Oct. ’10 from 832 15th Street, NW. Anyone check out their new space at 1712 I St, NW? Are the matzo balls just as good?

From the New York Times:
“President Obama and Congressional leaders of both parties said late Sunday that they had agreed to a framework for a budget deal that would cut trillions of dollars in federal spending over the next decade and clear the way for an increase in the government’s borrowing limit.”
“Dear PoPville,
What do folks think is the likely impact of the outcome of debt ceiling (and related) negotiations on the development of DC?
Should we be worried about significant layoffs in the Federal Govt as a result — and follow-on impact on demand for DC real estate and the like?
Interested in getting the perspective of PoPville…
Thank you.”

On Friday [Ed. Note: sorry for the delay, I was out of town] I got a few inquiries about questionable Panhandling in Dupont Circle.
“Dear PoP,
A couple of people I know have noticed a number of 20-40 something women in Dupont Circle begging for change today (Friday). Its odd because they don’t necessarily look like the homeless people that are traditionally in Dupont Circle. Have you, or your readers, heard anything about this?”
Another reader asks about a different situation:
“Dear PoP,
I was curious if by chance you or anyone who frequents this blog has noticed the young boy and his father outside the Woodley Park metro. The boy has been sitting on a bucket and playing the drums the past few weeks while pandering for money, as his father hovers in the general vicinity and hangs out. Do you know what the deal is with this kid? At first I felt bad for him, but i’m starting to think it’s some type of money making scheme and the father may be exploiting his son’s talent and youth, as they literally sit there for hours at a time. Thoughts?”
I’m not familiar with this specific case but I have friends who used to do this when they were young and they absolutely loved it (one is now a classical guitarist) so I don’t necessarily think this is an exploitation of talent.

Old Post Office Pavilion, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Back in March ’11 we talked about proposed uses for the Old Post Office Pavillion for a Friday Question of the Day.
This morning, a reader sends a link to a Washington Post article:
“…Trump plans include transforming the property into an “ultra-luxury” hotel with nearly 300 rooms, a large ballroom or conference room, a spa and a museum gallery dedicated to the building’s history leading into the building’s clock tower. The plans retain the building’s exterior facade as well as its original doors, hallways and interior features.”
The reader asks:
“On the one hand, it’s a building with enormous potential and should have its insides converted for modern purposes, but I’m not sure I want the Old Post Office to turn into a Trump-style hotel (ie a sleazy Atlantic City casino). What does PoPville think?”

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.
Rant: Anyone else noticing stink bugs starting to hit DC?
Revel: I’ve killed a few and they didn’t really stink.

I’ve been wondering for a while who’d be moving into the prime space formerly held by Randstad (next to Godiva Chocolates) at 1141 Connecticut Ave, NW.
Turns out it will be Mari Vanna Restaurant. According to a recent liquor license application, it will be:
“A fine dining restaurant serving traditional Russian cuisine with a seating capacity of 215 people inside and sidewalk café seating for 25 people outside. Total occupancy load is 250. Background music will be provided. There will be no entertainment and no dancing. No nude performance.”
It sounds like it’ll be from the same folks behind Mari Vanna in New York City:
“The menu offers time honored Russian classics such as the flavorsome customary soup Borsch with Pampushka, Beets, Broth, Beef, Cabbage, Carrots and Potatoes served with Sour Cream in a beautiful tureen that holds enough for seconds or thirds; try the dish that can be found on any dining table across Russia on any given holiday, the Olivier Salad, Diced Carrots, Green Peas, Pickles, and Cubed Bologna with a Light Sage Mayonnaise. There is also the beloved Beef Stroganoff served with Buckwheat and Mushrooms in Truffle Oil, warmed in an adorable Russian doll koozie of sorts; or the succulent Chicken Kiev Cutlets, cooked to perfection, juicy and moist, filled with a decadent herbed butter sauce. And the piece de resistance is of course the Petrossian Caviar platters from red to black served in a stackable Russian doll dish with Russian style blinis, sour cream, diced red onion and crumbled egg yolk.
Complementing the authentic fare is a vodka program like none other, featuring dozens of top-shelf Russian vodka, as well as selections from all over the world, more than 70 varieties total. Mari Vanna also makes an eclectic list of house-infused Russian vodkas with flavors ranging from sweet to spicy and savory. Guests can sip on vodka infused with Horseradish, Beets, Oats & Honey, Apricot, Watermelon, Garlic & Dill and Pineapple, just to name a few, all displayed in giant canisters at the bar.”
You can see their full NYC menu here.
I’ll be sure to update as construction progresses.
