  • Is there any information on how this happened? Was the dog in her yard at home or being walked?

I hope she has as quick of a recovery as possible!

    • textdoc

I was wondering the same; I hope the dog wasn’t running around unleashed.

(Not that that would make it OK to shoot the dog, unless there was no owner/minder present and the dog was in the process of attacking someone.)

  • Maire

Ugh. I wonder was it a bb gun? A kid thinking it’s fun to torment a small animal rather than someone trying to kill it (like with a semi-automatic)?

Not that it matters. Sickening any way you look at it.

  • Denizen of Tenallytown

We have less than half the story. A dog was found shot in the front and rear right legs. Was it being aggressive? Any other details? Hate to rush to judgment here.

    • Maire

I agree we don’t know the whole story, but I would assume if someone were defending themself that they wouldn’t just shoot the dog and walk away – they’d call 911 or Animal Control.

      • Anonymous

It’s illegal (and illogical) to carry a loaded weapon outside your house in DC, so there’s no way this was NOT premeditated.

        • photodork

I hate to break it to you, but that does not meet the standard for premeditation.

    • katesmash

I saw this on the news this morning – if I remember correctly, the dog was either in the backyard or in the alley behind the owner’s house when it got shot. People from the neighborhood said the dog was really sweet and there has never been a problem with agression.

    • Kristian

Having met a lot of people, II’d take take the dog’s side until I know all the facts.

      • Megan

        Amen to that.

  • A

There’s a special place in hell for people who do things like this. Absolutely disgusting.

    • Kyle W

In addition to a special place in Central Cell Block for this coward. They need to throw the book at this guy. Intentionally shooting a dog, for no reason, while it doesn’t rise to the level of shooting a person, is still quite serious and sad in my book. Hope they catch him.

    • H

Agreed. This is so unbelievably sad. I hope she has a speedy (and full) recovery and that there is some information out there to be found. I wish I could be of help but unfortunately don’t have any information, just the best wishes for the poor pooch!

  • AS

Is there any more information? I went to washhumane.org and couldn’t find anything, even in the law enforcement section.

  • Anonymous

sadly first thought was I bet the dog was off-leash. If I had to shoot a dog in self defense I would just walk away (then call help for the animal immediately) but I would not look for the owner. the unreasonable dog owners in this city who cant keep there dogs in yards or on leashes would probably be highly unreasonable if you had to approach them to tell them you shot there neglected pet. who knows if that was the case but it is a better and seemingly more likely scenerio than a random dog drive by.

If your gun was legally and safely stored inside your house, then there would be no reason to have it on you outside of your house (Where it’s illegal to carry). If you went in to your house to retrieve it, then you still have no justification because then you should have called the cops while you were inside –you were no longer in danger inside your house.

Sorry, but you failed logic 101.

      • photodork

It looks like the dog was located mere blocks from Maryland, so it could have been shot by a legally carried firearm there. Not to mention there are lots of folks in DC that can carry firearms legally all the time.

    • Maymo

Anonymous 7:56, I’m at a loss for words at the idiocy of your post.

If there’s a special place in hell for people who abuse animals, there must be a spot in purgatory for rampant stupidity.

  • noodles

Horrendous under any circumstance. Wishing a quick and full recovery to the dog and the owner has my understanding and sympathy.

  • mbm

I heard that the dog was shot in the owners back yard.

  • Sleepy

Are they sure it wasn’t a cop who did it? Usually that’s how dog murder stories turn out.

    • Denizen of Tenallytown

Did the dog have crack sprinkled on it?

      Captcha: 4KME (Fork me!)

      • jh

        hahaha! Good reference.

  • Maire

I hope this doesn’t turn out to have a nexus to dogfighting – that kind of thing makes me sick.

Sleepy – there is a TON of paperwork to be done when a police officer discharges their firearm. I would think we would know if that were the case here. But that’s a good question.

  • Jason

Just another day in the life of Ward 8

  • b

sounds like the park police to me…

  • AER

The dog was shot with either buck or bird shot, likely not a police officer nor can a MD resident legally carry a firearm across into DC. Keep your dogs on leashes and under your supervision.

  • greent

Scum. This human being is scum. i hope this person receives what they have dealt out.
