Back in Jan. we learned that a new Thai place was going to come into the old Straits of Malaya space at 1836 18th Street, NW. There’s been a lot of progress on the construction and I just noticed a logo for the new restaurant coming in – Zabb Asian Restaurant. They also have a location in Manassas VA and you can see that restaurant’s menu here. Hopefully they open in time to enjoy their great roof deck. Stay tuned.

Isn’t that right next door to Regent Thai too?

I have been to the one in Manassas and it is not bad and the prices are fair.

but, it’s still owned by the same people, right? ditto on the confusion over why they’re doing thai with Regent Thai literally next door.

I walked by there last night. The paper covering the windows was down so you could see inside.

    What I saw shocked me.

It looks like they are going for a serious lounge look and feel. There are a couple of wall hangings for “light shows”.I think they want the “Korova Milk Bar” vibe. Yikes!
I am not sure who the customer is meant to be but I hope it is a mostly local crowd.
The kids who frequent Lauroil Plaza from MD are really annoying.

Just had dinner there. The sushi was incredibly sub par, for above average pricing. The rice was mealy, there was a spec of crab in the california roll, and the eel was terrible. I did enjoy the scallop but not impressive. On top of that I asked for cold sushi. The waiter said they only had hot sushi, but the overly friendly manager came over and said they did. I was not amused when the bill came and it was $32 for a 175ml bottle. Seriously!?!? I should have asked, but with the best bottle of white at $28, I was shocked.
