I love the fact that the signs are in both Spanish and English. But I’m not so sure about what the people are doing. Are they playing volleyball? Do people play a lot of volleyball in Columbia Heights? Do you guys like these welcome signs?

We also got pretty cool welcome signs in Petworth almost exactly a year ago.

The ones with their arms in the air are being mugged. The guy on the lower right is the perp fleeing.

I thought they were stylized crime scene chalk outlines from a drive by.

  • Geezer

Dressing up highway-style cobra streetlamps with a banner is like whipped cream on a turd. Better to rid the neighborhood of these orange-glow, “you live in a crime scene”, sodium lights and replace them with lower, appropriately-styled fixtures that illuminate both the street and the community soul.

  • CLEARLY, these banners represent a prophecy that the Heights will soon be invaded by a plague of SPACE GUMBY…… which apparently coincides with some special arrangement of stars and planets… and the opening of the Target on 14th Street. When all these things happen at the same time, the Space Gumby hoarde will rise and we shall be their soulless lapdogs for all eternity.

    Next question?

I for one embrace our new Space Gumby overlords.

They are ugly, and this is not San Diego…no Volleyball courts to be found in Columbia Heights.

  • I wish we had more street banners, but I like them. I wish they would change more often too. Not, I suppose, the neighborhood banners, but it would be nice if the ones in high traffic areas changed for various citywide events like in other cities. Or just change with different types of concepts, like the urban forest project in times square. Or the gay pride banners in june on market street in SF. I also wish they were all bigger, they get dwarfed way up there. The ones on U Street look so tiny.
