Victoria writes:

“Installation of Living Time Line: Paul Robeson on Saturday May 30, 2015 on a U St. alleyway in D.C. Cory L Stowers received a commission from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities to create this mural, which depicts the life of Paul Robeson. The mural contains an image recognition technology which triggers access to rich content, and is the first use of this technology for an outdoor mural.”

Very cool!

His biography sounds really interesting, but I can’t find any connections to D.C. Anyone else more successful?

    • His wife was born in Washington, DC. Her biography is really interesting too! Just perused on Wikipedia…

    • Yeah, the only D.C. connection I can find for Paul Robeson — other than through his wife — is when he was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee during the McCarthy era.
His wife was a granddaughter of Francis Lewis Cardozo, after whom Cardozo High School was named, and thus a distant relative of Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Cardozo.
In a totally non-D.C. vein… my grandfather was always very proud of having had Robeson as a classmate at Columbia Law School.

  • I like it, but somehow from the picture it looks like he’s birthing an alien from his stomach…

  • Make sure you catch the Robeson quote ‘I make no separation between my work as an artist and my work as a human being.’ The mural concept is the brainchild of Sifu Abdur Rahim Muhammad of the Kung Fu school inside and wouldn’t be possible without the collaborative efforts of everyone involved, including artists, funders and building owner.
