World Market Coming to Bed Bath and Beyond in Chinatown

“Dear PoPville,

A friend mentioned that she saw a sign at the Chinatown Bed, Bath and Beyond that said something about a World Market coming to the downtown area. Any info on that??”

I spoke with an employee at Bed Bath and Beyond (709 7th Street NW) who said they are going to remodel a section inside of the store that should open in about a month or so. World Market’s website says:

“In the late 1950s, a San Francisco businessman turned traveler and importer began selling shiploads of hand-woven wicker from one of the city’s piers. As crates were unloaded, locals lined up and loaded up. Even curious tourists were drawn to the unique and unusual.

With such a receptive audience eagerly awaiting his return, it only made sense to open a store. And in 1958 he opened the first store in San Francisco’s famed Fisherman’s Wharf and called it Cost Plus World Market. The store quickly became a destination for those who craved original and handmade items from around the world. Items were sold at cost, plus ten percent – hence the name Cost Plus World Market!

More than fifty years later it’s still our passion to discover extraordinary finds from all over the world and make them accessible to all.

Our everyday low prices and high-quality, original items are a great value. Choose from eye-catching, trend-setting home accents, an awe-inspiring array of international foods and wines, and much more.

We bring the beauty and excitement of global bazaars to you. Our selection is always changing, and, like favorite mementos from your life, each item has a story worth sharing. From Balinese baskets, pottery from Portugal and collectibles from Africa to scrolled artwork inspired by Spanish artifacts – each store is a treasure trove.

Gifts galore fill our floors – you’ll find something for everyone, from children to parents. And when you need entertaining essentials, we’re your one-stop shop – whether you’re hosting a holiday or a very personal special occasion.”

  • I *love* world market. It’s the only place I’ve ever been able to find maple sugar candy outside the northeast or hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles for toast!) outside Holland.

  • oh man, i will spend way too much money here.

  • Just to be clear: is World Market opening a “store-within-a-store” concept or will they have their own dedicated space? All the stores I’ve visited have definitely veered on the larger side, so I’m not sure how well they could manage in much smaller space.

    • I’ve been to a couple “store-within-a-store” World Markets. They have only the food, not the furniture, so they don’t need so much space. It will be a vast improvement over the BBB junk food options!!

      • BBB has some decent food options, though def not on par with World Market. I do wish they were going to also have furniture/decor, that’s leaps and bounds ahead of the stuff at Bed Bath and Beyond. I don’t want to lose this BBB, but really, it’s just the toiletries and cleaning supplies and storage stuff that I mostly buy here.

        • Agreed – I really wish they at least had some of the smaller furniture/decor items though I see why it makes sense that they won’t carry those items. Still excited but not as excited 🙁

      • What about beer and wine? Did the “stores within stores” you mention carry alcohol?

    • Yes, It will be a store within a store. Small section of BBB near the registers.

  • They are probably doing the same model they have at the Tyson’s store. It’s essentially a World Market grocery store within the BBB that is far more robust than the groceries in traditional World Market stores, including freezer cases and cold beer and wine. Unfortunately, they probably won’t have home decor or anything outside of groceries!

    • My head exploded a few months ago when I went to the BBB in Tyson’s for the first time. The World Market inside of it is the typical grocery section of the World Market, but on steroids. It’s effin beautiful. I bought one of everything.

  • Hopefully they will have Tim-Tams!!!

  • Rhubarb Strawberry Jam here i come!

  • I was recently in a World Market and discovered they were absorbed by Bloodbath & Beyond. Hopefully it won’t affect things too much.

BBB and WM merged about 2 years ago; for a couple years prior they had tested out WM pop-up shops in BBB around the holidays with a limited selection of food and wine. I don’t think much has changed since the merger other than the addition of more ‘store within a store’ concepts.

this is only world market food, not decor? dislike.

  • I love, LoVe, LOVE! this Bed, Bath & Beyond. Also, the new nearby Wallgreen’s purveys, much to my surprise, delicious and reasonably priced sandwiches. Not exactly Chinese food, but I am not complaining.

  • I’m confused. So this is a World Market/BB&B hybrid? I don’t do much suburban shopping; had no idea this was a thing.

  • I think you just made my day. When will this open? I plan to be first in line.
