Until last week I only passed these mosaics by car. But I always wondered what they were. Walking by I found half the answer. It was a sorta fundraiser called the hopscotch kids. Continues after the jump.
Sadly the thorough explanation was across the street and it felt a bit too perilous to cross for me. I never realized how sweet the actual mosaics were:
And I really liked this one:
Anyone know more about this fundraiser?

Gathering in one place to show respect for those who served their country is thoughtful....
Don't you have to wait in line just to put your name down, though?
Also, what if I...
I would also go to your councilmember (who is Jim Graham) and explain the situation. They...
So awful, praying that see and the baby are as okay as you can be after being shot
Get rid of this stupid reservation system. Why should a customer have to wait in line...
All I know is that they take on an ominous air when you’re walking that bridge at night!
Funny, We just ordered an art book about all the art contributions of Daimler Benz.
I love that mosaic. Mosaics in general, actually – there’s an excellent one in front of Carlos Rosario and on Euclid and 14th.

There’s a little of the history there. The new Senate Square building by ABDO is actually the Old Children’s Museum. Artomatic was there back in 2003 or 2004 after the museum closed.
Once upon a time, DC had a children’s museum, as nearly all major cities do. The museum needed money, so they attempted to raise funds through sponsorship of kids’ mosaics placed on the nearby bridge. Then, the city decided to sell the museum’s building to ABDO development so they can make overpriced condos (Senate Square) out of it. Now, the city has no children’s museum.
