Children’s Book Talk: Hanh Bui – Ánh’s New Word

Politics and Prose
5015 Connecticut Ave NW
Washington, D.C. 20008

About the Book:

Ánh moves to America from Vietnam, where they were an outspoken student, but now at their new school they are nervous to speak in class. Ánh, with the help of their grandmother, finds the confidence to learn a new language. Bao Luu’s soft and warm illustrations help tell the story of young Ánh in Hanh Bui’s new picture book. Based on Bui’s own experiences learning a new language, Ánh’s New Word shows that with kindness and determination trying new things doesn’t have to be scary.

About the Author:

Hanh Bui is an author of picture books The Yellow Áo Dài and Ánh’s New Word. Bui came to Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania from Vietnam as a child. She was inspired by her first teacher while at a refugee camp, and pursued a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. Later she became an elementary school teacher before transitioning into a full-time parent to three children.
