You are warmly welcome to join us for the unveiling of a memorial plaque honoring two beloved members of the former Bertie Backus school community: Sara Clark, a dedicated teacher, and Asia Cottom, a bright young student.
Twenty-five years ago, Ms. Clark and Ms. Cottom were among the DC educators and students that lost their lives aboard American Airlines Flight 77 while traveling together on an educational trip. This memorial, created through a partnership among community members, ANC 5A and UDC staff, will permanently honor their memory on the grounds of the former Bertie Backus school, where their story began.
When: Friday September 11, 2026 at 9am
Where: 5171 South Dakota Ave. NE, on the front lawn of the former Bertie Backus school site
The ceremony will include remarks from community leaders and invited guests, a moment of silence and the dedication of the plaque. Light refreshments will follow.
Seating will be available, and the ceremony will take place outdoors, so please plan accordingly. All are welcome. Please feel free to share this invitation with neighbors, former Backus students and staff, and anyone who would like to help us honor these two remarkable lives.
