Thanks to a reader for sending me a link to this Washington Post article.
The article starts: “On the back patio of the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker House at 503 Rock Creek Church Rd. in the District’s Petworth neighborhood, sacks of potatoes and onions lay next to crates of tomatoes, green beans, cabbage, lettuce and broccoli. Further down, tables brimmed with bread.”
In addition to global youth day, Saturday I also saw folks from Hands on DC working in and around the home of the Clerks, Cardozo High School. Pictured above some folks from Deloitte were volunteering on a peace garden. Deloitte has a contingent of 45 volunteers who call themselves “the labor party” although one member emphasized that it was a literal designation not a political one. Well, whatever is it was really amazing to see so many people working together on such a great cause. Other volunteers cleaned the perimeter, painted inside and did some mulching among other tasks. In addition to Cardozo, Hands on DC provided approximately 2000 volunteers working in 26 other public DC schools. Right on. My faith in humanity has been restored for a couple of weeks. We will be engaging volunteers in a full day of fun-filled service where we will be painting inspirational quotes & murals throughout the school. “There is a link on dc.gov about tomorrow’s designated national day of service in remembrance of the anniversary of Sept. 11. Mayor Fenty has declared it “Patriot’s Day” in the District. They also have a link to some service opportunities. Serve DC
