While I normally give all my love to the sweet tree in Grant Circle, lately I’ve been admiring these three trees in the triangle park just south of Grant Circle at New Hampshire and Taylor. How did they bend like that? Was that natural or were they manipulated like bonsai trees?

Ok, I feel like I can safely say, I will never, ever, find a cooler security door than this one. Check out the equally impressive security window after the jump. (more…)

Where are my botanists? What type of tree is this?

“i was flipping through some photos i’ve taken around the city looking for a favorite spot; i was thinking maybe the black cat or polly’s, but those are just places where i have had a few killer parties. and the scenic shots of memorials just show places i take the folks when they’re in town. columbia heights is where i live. the first shot is my entry if i need to pick just one; it is at the corner of oak and ogden,”

I’m not sure if this picture captures it properly, but this tree is flush against the house. I’ve never seen a tree like this before, despite my background in field botany… So what type of tree is this?

So I walked by this tree with some odd hanging fruits that I realized upon closer inspection were pomegranates! Wild. Isn’t that like a Mediterranean fruit? I guess maybe DC is just far south enough for trees like this. Has anyone seen a lemon tree in DC? Or an orange tree? Wait, do oranges grow on trees or bushes? Holy cow, I don’t know where oranges come from…

For those who put graffiti on trees. I know there are many worse things in this world but I just find this particularly offensive. I also like saying the word particularly but that is neither here nor there.

Last week my block had those signs up: “no parking – tree maintenance.” Ok, that is cool. But you can’t fool Murphy. Apparently in the storm last night, an old tree one block over lost a huge limb. You can fool some trees some of the time but you can’t fool all trees all of the time or something like that.
