Our D.C. employment lawyers represent D.C. employees in severance agreement negotiations. Severance agreements are contracts that govern an employee’s departure from a business. It is important to have counsel when an employee is faced with leaving an employer and needs to negotiate a resolution. We provide legal advice and representation to employees seeking the best possible severance agreement terms.

The Severance Negotiations Process

Severance agreements may be offered by an employer in any number of situations. The employee may be facing termination and the employer may want to resolve all outstanding issues before they leave. Severance agreements are also sometimes offered to employees who are laid off or facing retirement. If an employee is let go but not offered a severance agreement, hiring counsel can often prod the employer to offer a severance agreement. In some cases, the severance agreement process can be resolved through simple talks between your lawyer and the employer’s lawyer.

Types of Severance Agreement Terms

While severance agreements typically involve the payment of a monetary sum to a departing employee, there are many other terms to consider. Some of the possible terms to consider in a D.C. severance agreement may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Financial terms, tax consequences, and timing of severance payments
  • Continuation of employment benefits (e.g. health, life, disability)
  • Rights to unemployment compensation
  • Claims to be waived (wrongful termination, discrimination, whistleblowing)
  • Confidentiality clauses
  • Non-Disparagement clauses
  • Re-employment possibilities
  • Non-Compete clauses
  • Preservation of trade secrets
  • How references will be handled
  • Recommendation letters
  • How disputes are handled
  • Applicable law

Employees give up important rights when they sign a severance agreement. Before signing such an agreement, the employee should consult with a lawyer to discuss the rights that he or she may be waiving and the terms included.

Roda Road Trip Activity Book

D.C. residents love to get out of town and escape the steamy summer weather.

Whether you are heading to the mountains or the beach, Roda’s making road trips fun (and safe!) again.

Before you hit the road this summer, check out Roda’s Summer Special. They’ll get your car road trip ready with an oil change, tire rotation, and new wiper blades for $150 (more than $50 in savings!). They will also perform a 39-point inspection, so you can be sure your car will get you out of D.C., and back — because nothing’s worse than being sidelined on I-95.

On top of all that, they’ve got the key to beating boredom while in Bay Bridge traffic — a road trip activity kit that’s fun for the whole family.

Bonus: no batteries required!

Just bring your car in for service, and we will return it with a road trip book inside.

We can all agree that the plunger is gross; figuring out what to do with it after clearing a clogged toilet is another matter.

You know what I am talking about, you plunge your toilet and then look at the plunger afterward and wonder: “Do I just put it on the floor and hope the germs on it die on their own? Should I rinse it in the tub or sink and hope the germs aren’t transferred there?” Suffice it to say, regardless of what you do, the traditional plunger is a germ spreader.

But does it have to be that way?

That’s not what longtime Arlington resident and Schoon™ inventor Elaine Steele thinks!

The Schoon

The idea for Schoon came to Elaine one morning in January 2020 after plunging yet another clog in her bathroom in her old house in Arlington. A search of the internet for a plunger that has a way to clean itself yielded no results. After an exhaustive search of the Patent and Trademark site to find an invention that solves this problem, she found that there were none. Elaine realized that a self-cleaning plunger did not exist.

Elaine approached her longtime friend, Pierre, about the idea of a self-cleaning plunger. Being a germaphobe, he was intrigued, and the two started collaborating on the idea that February. Several designs, a few prototypes, lots of testing, and a patent application later, Schoon was born!

Making Schoon a reality required more elbow grease! Researching and dealing with several manufacturers, part suppliers, and assembly vendors to get a quality product at the right price point was a long journey.

So how does Schoon work? After unclogging your toilet, Schoon allows you to use the included wand to spray disinfectant over the top and the underneath of the plunger cup, cleaning the plunger immediately after use. You can also use Schoon to disinfect the toilet and surrounding area. Elaine says, “Pierre and I intentionally created a sleek design, so that you can leave your Schoon out and at the ready for use when you need it.”
