Did you know Friday, May 21, is Bike to Work Day?

No, this isn’t another holiday the internet invented (though we don’t hate National Pizza Day). Bike to Work Day is a D.C. area holiday that’s been around for 20 years now.

Here’s how it works: On Friday, May 21, strap on your helmet and bike to work. If you’re still working from home, you can still hop on your bike for a little cruise.

Along the way, stop by one of the 95 pit stops set up in D.C., Maryland and Virginia, and grab your Bike to Work Day T-shirt. (Masks are required.) Then, on you go to work — or back home!

Bike alone or feel free to grab your co-worker, friend or work-from-home buddy and have them ride along.

This is also a great way to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month. You’ll get to enjoy the springtime temps and stretch your legs — all while reaping the mental health benefits of exercise.

The event is free, and if you pre-register by May 14 and attend, you get a free T-shirt (while supplies last) and bike raffle entry.

Bike to Work Day is funded by DDOT, MDOT, VDOT and USDOT.

Commuter Connections, the regional network of transportation organizations coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governmentsoffers free services and programs that help employees and employers throughout the region find the most cost-effective, convenient and safe commutes. Information on ride-matching, public transit, HOV/Express lanes, park-and-ride lots, bicycling, teleworking and commuter incentives are among the services Commuter Connections has been promoting since its founding in 1974.

Dear PoPville readers,

Are you sick of reading about the pandemic? I get it. I’m sick of writing to you about the pandemic. But today I’m pretty thrilled to tell you that Well-Paid Maids, the D.C. area’s only living-wage cleaning service, is open and ready to work for you in a way that you’ll find more convenient.

Since we reopened in August, we have worked to serve customers within some pretty strict safety limitations. To keep our team and customers safe, our protocols included only servicing unoccupied homes, limiting the potential exposure of our employees during their commutes, and a variety of incentives to make sure that employees who might be ill could stay home without risking their livelihoods.

We have also spent the past month working to help our team get vaccinated (see above for some action shots!) by any means necessary — providing paid time off for their appointments, paying their transportation costs to and from vaccine sites and paying cash bonuses once they received all doses.

Because of the success of these efforts, in tandem with the success our country has had in suppressing the virus, I am delighted to announce that we will be lifting our most cumbersome restrictions. Starting June 1, we welcome you to book an appointment with no restrictions on staying in your home during the cleaning.

Springtime is feeling especially hopeful this year. After a dreary winter — and an all-around dreary 2020 — life in D.C. is slowly revealing signs of pre-pandemic normalcy.

The iconic National Cathedral is embracing this feeling of hope with Michael Pendry’s “Les Colombes” (The Doves) art installation.

Experience (in person!) the cascading column of 2,000 origami doves flying through the Cathedral’s nave. Each dove is inscribed with prayers and messages of hope and are colorfully illuminated by the stained glass.

You can reserve a daytime exhibit walk, or experience the doves at night. Tickets are available in 15-minute increments to help facilitate social distancing.

You can also attend “Hope Floats: A Night of Storytelling Beneath the Doves” on Wednesday, May 19, at 7 p.m. Settle into the Cathedral’s nave and take in stories of hope, renewal and light. Attend in person or sit in virtually.

This exhibit is only available for a limited time, so go online soon to reserve a spot for your visit to see the Doves.

It’s Mother’s Day weekend, which means a slight dip in the total number of open houses across the District with around 250 on the books. If you already have Sunday plans, there’s still plenty of Saturday open houses as well! Make sure your agent has a strategy to keep you safe while searching for your next home. Not everyone has the time or resources to commit to a full master’s degree program. Some may already have a master’s and are just looking for a narrow update on a current skill set. For these reasons, Virginia Tech’s 100% online Master of Information Technology (VT-MIT) program now offers professionals the option to earn a graduate certificate in 10 specialized IT subject areas:

“Leaders can find a certificate that speaks exactly to their professional needs without having to commit several years to pursuing a master’s degree,” says Barbara Hoopes, Associate Professor of Business Information Technology at Virginia Tech.

In fact, nine of the ten certificates require just three courses, so professionals can earn a certificate in as little as 12 months as a part-time student.

Because the certificate courses are the same as those offered through the full degree program, students can apply their certificate courses toward their master’s if they decide to pursue the degree in the future.

Learn more about the fully online graduate certificates and master’s degree at an upcoming information session:

  • Session 1: Wednesday, May 12 at 3 p.m. (online)
  • Session 2: Monday, May 17 at 1 p.m. (online)

Can’t make it on these dates? Email [email protected] to receive a copy of a recently recorded session or visit vtmit.vt.edu to learn more.

Thinking about graduate school? The Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University offers flexible part-time or full-time options for graduate certificate and master’s degree programs designed to teach applicable, real-world knowledge for in-demand careers.

Experience a class firsthand by attending The Legal Framework of National Security, taught by former Deputy Director of the FBI Andrew McCabe. McCabe will examine the legal framework that both empowers and restrains intelligence, military and law enforcement authorities in national security.
