What I truly love most about this doorway is the sculpture on the left. Take a look at a close up after the jump, it has the most expressive face. (more…)

I was absolutely stunned to encounter this lawn jockey on my walk about this past weekend. I didn’t just take a double take, I took a quadruple take. Then I slapped my face a few times and looked again. Indeed, I thought I may have been transported back decades. I thought for sure this must have been one of the most racist things I’ve ever encountered in DC. But maybe I was wrong. I did a little research when I got back home and apparently back in the Underground Railroad days these lawn jockeys used to signify a safe place. Sometimes those supporting the Underground railroad would tie a a green string around the wrist to signify a safe place. You can read more about the history at this Web site or here at the Wikipedia entry.
So after reading the history a bit, what do you think about encountering a lawn jockey like this? Is it racist or in homage to the Underground railroad or is it simply a lawn decoration?

This is one of those old fire alarm pull boxes that has been converted into a sculpture. I’ve seen many of these alarm boxes converted into paintings but this is the first sculpture I’ve seen. This one is located in Mt. Pleasant and apparently is showing some troops being taken to the old Mt. Pleasant Hospital. Really an amazing conversion, no? Check out another picture after the jump. A pious one, but damn he has good posture and presence.

Behold the gargoyle gecko. I wish I could take credit for that name but my friend’s girlfriend came up with it. It is super freaky though. Kind of looks like a cat bred with lizard of some sort with some demon ancestry mixed in there as well. So who knows their mythology? What is this? Whatever it is, it has haunted me since mid day Saturday…

I really like this one. It speaks to me. I mean it literally speaks to me. But I’ve been sick for the past few days so hopefully it is just the nyquil talking… Should I not take nyquil during the day? But I really do think this is a super cool sculpture despite its rabid support for Ron Paul…

Looks like this may be another piece by Uzikee Nelson but I don’t know for certain. This one is located at the Josephine Butler Arts Center across from Malcolm X/Meridan Park. Not a bad looking house either. House photo after the jump. (more…)

I waked by this sculpture off of 14th St. on Belmont. You can see the plaque describing the inspiration after the jump. (more…)

Apparently the DC Commission for the arts has selected the Petworth metro to receive a new sculpture. It is really quite beautiful. The artist is Lisa Scheer and she collaborated with a poet, Ethebert Miller. On the leaf a poem reads: “Every leaf surrenders to air We dance We flutter We touch the earth” Beautiful words to go with a beautiful sculpture.
No dedication date has been set yet but the work should be fully completed by the end of this week. We are very lucky to have this addition.

I think it may be Budda? Anyone know?
