Big DCFD turnout on this one. Lots of smoke out the window of a rowhouse. It doesn’t appear there were any injuries but will update as more details become available. Emergency vehicles responded approximately 10pm Tues. evening.

Since the economy took a skid we haven’t heard much about development at the Old Soldiers Home. Wayan, spotted a bit of beautification as the fences were getting painted.
Do you think the chain link part of the fence will make it more welcoming? Any predictions for when development talks may get restarted?

“Dear PoP,
While we were all sleeping in [Monday] morning, the Donna Ventura reality show came to Grant Circle. http://www.donnavventura.com/eng/ has a gaggle of leggy girls competing to be travel reporters, and this morning they were circling the Circle looking for a good camera angle to do “field reporting”.
Wayan”
Has anyone ever heard of Donna Ventura reality show before? Thanks to Wayan for sending. Their video is hilarious:

So do you think this is a “drop dead renovation”? Does $599,000 sound reasonable for this 4 bed/3.5 bath home?

I’ve gotten tons of emails asking me why I haven’t posted photos of the new YES! Organic Market located at the corner of Georgia Ave and Taylor. I simply hadn’t had a chance to stop by yet. But I remedied that and you guys are right, this place is amazing! First of all the place was much bigger than I thought. And I’ll echo what a lot of folks said, it is such a pleasure to have a nice clean spot like this and also the folks working there were beyond nice. I ran into the owner, Mr. Cha, who wanted to thank the community for their support.
I was particularly impressed with the beer selection…

On a side note, I mentioned previously that I recently sold my car. Well, to go grocery shopping I bought a granny cart. It is amazing to me that overnight I’ve turned into an 80 year old Jewish guy from the lower East Side with this cart. But I’ve decided to embrace it.

Lots more photos of inside the YES! after the jump. (more…)

This condo is located at 1327 Randolph Street, NW:

“NEW PRICE – MUST SEE!! Rich, contemporary finishes complement the open floorplan and two master suites!! Sip coffee or grill meals on the back terrace! Located in bustling Columbia Heights, this condo features glowing hardwood floors, stainless steal/granite kitchen, granite baths, and hardwired audio system. Walkscore gives 83 out of 100 – VERY WALKABLE!”
More info and photos found here.
I’ve always liked this building, I think I’ve posted the door before. The condo looks like it is on the ground floor or garden level. Do you think $395,000 sounds reasonable for this 2 bed/2 bath?

Washington Post reports:
“Four people were shot Monday, one of them fatally, in an outburst of gunfire in the Petworth/Brightwood Park area of Northwest Washington, authorities said.
The shooting was reported about 6:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Hamilton Street. No motive was immediately available.”

I think it might be time to redesignate the home being renovated at Upshur and New Hampshire, formerly known as the Petworth Eyesore. While you can see it still has a ways to go, it seems the new owners are putting a ton of work into it. I definitely think removing the siding and putting up brick is a huge improvement. If they brick it up all the way around do you think we should remove the tag of eyesore from this property?
Hello Cupcake, located at 1351 Connecticut Avenue, NW, is celebrating its one year birthday and giving away free cupcakes today starting at 10am.
And from a reader:
“As you might know, Washingtonian.com is holding a “pizza pool” NCAA-style bracket for readers’ favorite pizza places in the region.
As it turns out, on day 1 of Round 2, two Columbia Heights businesses are up against two NoVa businesses: Pete’s is up against Cafe Pizzaiola (Alexandria and Crystal City), and RedRocks is up against Piola (Rosslyn).
Voting ends at noon, at which time Petworth’s own Moroni & Brother’s takes the batter’s box, against Logan Circle high-end restaurant Posto, since Moroni won in the first round against PieTanza.”

These condos are located at 3602 Rock Creek Church Road:
The flier says:
“FHA APPROVED. Elegant European finishes you wont find anywhere under 500K, smart spaces, 8 one bedroom units at the Colvin House, steps to METRO, and everything Columbia Heights. Hardwood floors, washer and dryer in unit, parking extra, priced to sell.”
More info found here and here. A photo tour can be found here.
We judged the building before it was completely finished back in July and folks mostly liked it. Now we can get a look inside. It seems pretty nice. Units range from $259,000 – $293,000. Sound reasonable? What do you think of the units themselves?
