Everyone had one of those ever-changing stores in their town. In my Maryland hometown, it was the video store that turned into a pet store, to a consignment shop, and eventually settling as an Old Country Buffet (ick). In Columbia Heights, it’s the building that was a Mayorga coffee, then a bar/lounge with hip-hop/DJ nights, a short-lived (yet tasty) stint as a Korean restaurant, and now Nori Asian Bistro and Sushi Bar. Nori is trying its hand at a location cursed with unsuccessful ventures; can they break the failed business model mode?

With DC’s sushi resume (sushime?) including Sushi-Ko, Sushi Taro, and Kaz Sushi Bistro, any restaurant featuring rice + seafood + seaweed has a lot to live up to. In terms of sushi quality, Nori Asian Bistro is about three steps up above from Whole Foods. That’s not necessarily a bad thing (WF sushi is actually quite good), but if you are going specifically for rolled up goodies, you may find their sushi a tad on the dry side. Their other specialties, noodles and stir fry dishes, are authentic, not too greasy, and served with a slightly over-eager smile. The best bet? The Bento box – a HUGE meal featuring a choice of meat (I had the perfectly-cooked spicy pork), sushi, sashimi, salad, and a collection of wonderful wonton-esque fried concoction. For $9, it’s a steal, considering Sushi-Ko’s bento boxes run up to $16. All in all, I hope that despite the cursed status of that commercial corner, Nori stays to add a unique flavor to the growing single-establishment Columbia Heights restaurant community. May God help us all if an Old Country Buffet moves in.

I particularly liked this one because the artist, VJ, explained to me that he used blue and red to signify blue states and red states and that “we’re all one under the sun”. I actually did a neat neighborhood find on VJ’s shop on Georgia Ave. Head artist, Edmund “VJ” Sanyeneh, runs ShowOff Apparel located at 2608 Georgia Ave.

Lots more art and press release after the jump. (more…)

I found this photo on flickr from Calgary and, well, if they’re in Calgary I guess they should be in Columbia Heights as well. Do you think the Guardian Angels can have an impact on reducing crime?

Starting Monday, Pete’s Apizza (right outside of the Columbia Heights metro) will open at 7AM for folks to grab a cup of Illy Caffe (espresso drinks and regular coffee), as well as breakfast pastries. I’ll post more details on the menu as it becomes available. Always good to have more breakfast options!

Thanks to a reader for sending this photo. This was taken today at the Target in Columbia Heights. I support the option but I’m still going to get my wine at D’Vines across the street. They gave me a great recommendation last time I went. Although, I now have a new spot for my box of wine purchases…

I know lot of readers are into Yoga so I thought it’d be interesting to get a get quick impression from a participant.

Now that it is getting cold out, and I was starting to get burned out of my triathlon-training-oriented exercise routine, I decided to head north on 14th Street and try out Quiet Mind Yoga. I have really enjoyed all their classes. The instructors are great, and the studio has a good vibe. Everyone is friendly, and the classes are not too crowded. I always hated doing yoga at the gym and being squished tight with other people. How can you relax when you can’t do a pose without bumping into someone else? The one drawback of Quiet Mind is its location across the street from the fire station. It can be challenging to achieve a zen state with sirens going off periodically.

Aside from location how does one decide on chosing a particular Yoga Spot over another?

While we’re talking about about Yoga, I received the following email from another great Yoga Spot – Yoga House:

I was wondering if you’d be willing to post about the $5 community classes 6:30-7:30 on Fridays at Yoga House (http://www.yogahousestudio.com), which is right above Temperance Hall. Student teachers (like me) volunteer our time to the community in return for a $5 donation to Yoga House to defray the studio’s costs. There are two classes — Kundalini and Vinyasa. It’s a great way for people to check out the studio or a new form of yoga. I’ll be there this Friday – drop by before the Halloween festivities so you can leave your work week behind and build energy for the weekend! More after the jump. (more…)

A reader asks in the comments. From the CH Listserv:

Unfortunately I must inform you all that there was another fatal shooting in the area. A young man was gunned down on the 2800 block of 11th St at approximately 8:15. Third District responded quickly. I spoke with a family member and gave my condolences to the grieving family.”

and

The decadent was 40 year old AA Male. In addition to 3D, Chief Lanier is on site along with Commander Kucik and CM Jim Graham. MPD is investigating. The incident occurred on 11th between Harvard and Girard. If anyone has information please contact our tip line on 202 727 9099 or text on #50411″

and from Council member Jim Graham:

“A short time ago, I came home from the scene of a murder, at 11th and Harvard, where there lay on the cold street the body of man…shot repeatedly. Police said it had all tab telltale marks of a targeted shooting. 5-10 shots. Just after 8 PM.

Details are still very sketchy. Some told me that the victim (said to be 39 years old), and his family might have lived right on on 11th.

Anyway, my thought on this latest example of violence. And my thoughts are with the family and his loved ones in this time of great tragedy for their family.”

Sweet! I know folks are always curious about delivery options so I thought I’d spread the word. This is, of course, the Potbelly’s located by the Columbia Heights metro. This could be a very dangerous development for me… Surely Potbelly’s has the best chocolate chip cookies in the city, yeah?

“What up with the Wine bar/community center on 11th street? Thought it was supposed to by open the end of this month. Drove past it the other night and the it looks kinda derelict.”

Last I heard they were finalizing the permitting process. I don’t think they were ever supposed to open at the end of the month. I think a more realistic opening will be in December/January. At Columbia Heights Day I did pick up a card that says:

“Room 11 Wine and Dessert Bar featuring wine by the glass and bottle; beer and hand crafted cocktails; specialty coffee and tea; pastries b PAISLEY FIG; cheeses and cured meats; soups, salads, sandwiches; and small plates. For more information email [email protected]

It sounds like it is going to be well worth the wait!
