I’m all for CVS, seriously I am. But it seems painful that this old theater in Brookland was converted into a CVS. I also noticed that the old movie theater in south Dupont is also now a CVS. I miss movie theaters. Oh well…

Wow, I think they did a really good job with this addition. You can hardly tell it is new from a distance.

It is from the Dominican House of Studies building:

Think they did a good job?

And for those that want to see an old school 70s style artist studios, check it out after the jump. (more…)

Of course I couldn’t go to the Brookland area without checking out the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It is located at 400 Michigan Avenue, NE. It most definitely is impressive. There are tons of mosaics that are pretty fresh.

Actually what I liked most was the hall with all the names engraved on the walls:

And there are thousands of names. I couldn’t believe I randomly spotted this one:

Truth be told I was more blown away by the Franciscan Monastery. Nevertheless it’s most definitely worth a visit. A couple more photos after the jump. (more…)

Continuing with Brookland week…
They’ve taken the southwestern flavor pretty seriously!

Here is another cool example from Brookland (Kearny Street, NE). I took a few shots but it was somewhat obscured by a tree. It certainly is a very different style from the other homes I saw in that area. The windows are wild. What do you think – thumbs up or down?

A few more photos after the jump (including a surprise for ‘not telling’). (more…)

Wow. Holy cow. This place was unbelievable. I can’t believe I’ve lived in DC for 12 years and have just learned about it. This of course is the Franciscan Monastery located at 1400 Quincy Street, NE. Their brochure says:
“On a wooded hillside in Northeast Washington, The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land rises in solitary grandeur. The Monastery and its shrines, constructed over a century ago, are religious centers for tourists and pilgrims of all faiths. Offering a chance to see replicas of the famous Holy Land Shrines… The Gardens and Shrines. An oasis of serenity…the acres of gardens change with every season…” You can read more about the architecture here.
So as you can tell already I was stunned by the beauty of this place. The gardens and the Monastery itself were sensational. There are daily tours at 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm and on Sunday at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. Personally I was most happy in the amazing gardens where you can’t even hear a car go by. Amazing. But of course the photos will do more justice than anything I can write.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

I told you Brookland was good to me…

This home is located at 2020 Lawrence Street, NE:
The flier says:
“Nicely restored detached Cape Cod. The facade belies the very sharp interior. New HVAC systems. 2-zone: Lower Level and first and second floors. Enjoy large yard. Parking. This is Value Packed and an investment grade property. Shown easily by appointment. Bonus lower level for au pair suite or “mother-in-law suite”.”
More info and photos found here.
Let me say that Brookland really knocked my socks off. A great quiet neighborhood with some really cool homes. There are a few restaurants but my friend who lives there told me that his and his wife’s number one complaint is the lack of restaurants and bars. But it’s not too far by car or bus from the hot spots.
So this home is interesting. It has dropped from $542,000 to the current asking price of $499,000. In addition to the price what do you think of the home itself?
Ed. Note: I think this home may actually be in a neighborhood called Woodridge which borders Brookland.

Maybe I just got too much sun but I was amazed at this garage. It is built underneath the front yard of home in Brookland. It is just crazy. That must’ve been quite the effort to build this, yeah? It blew my mind.

Brookland, was very very good to me.
