Well-Paid Maids, a living-wage home cleaning company, continues its fight for the region’s workforce by stepping up its advocacy for all workers.

In late October, Operations Manager Dasha Johnson was a featured speaker at a Progressive Maryland town hall with U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), imploring the senator to fight for the jeopardized childcare and paid leave elements in the Build Back Better Bill. You can see Dasha’s testimony at the 1:38:30 mark.

Later in November, Well-Paid Maids owner Aaron Seyedian will testify in Howard County to support a minimum wage increase before the county council.

Seyedian knows a bit about the minimum wage and living-wage. He founded the company in 2017 by offering workers $16 an hour — it’s now $20 — and a full slate of benefits, nearly unheard of in the house cleaning industry where the maids are often contractors. Well-Paid Maids staff are employees and as such receive health, dental and vision care; 22 paid days off each year; and 100 percent reimbursed commuting costs.

Food & Friends’ annual Thanksgiving pie sale and fundraiser, Slice of Life is happening now through November 17!

Each pie purchased through Slice of Life provides one full day of nutritious meals for a Food & Friends client — your Washington, D.C. area neighbors battling cancer, HIV/AIDS, or other serious illnesses.

This year, local-favorite baker Whisked by Jenna! is back to supply 9,000 pies. They are available in five delicious flavors: Apple Crumble, Classic Pumpkin, Sweet Potato, Nutty Pecan and the decadent Sea Salt Chocolate Chess. Pie prices start at $28.

Pre-purchased pies can be picked up on Tuesday, November 23 at 33 convenient walk-up, curbside or drive-thru locations throughout the D.C. metro region. Slice of Life is made possible with generous support from Whole Foods Market, their Exclusive Presenting Sponsor, and pies can be picked up at their targeted local locations.

All pies are 9″ rounds and packaged in a sturdy, gift-quality box. Purchasers can also donate a pie to a Food & Friends client, to be delivered by volunteers on Thanksgiving Day along with a full turkey dinner. You can also lead a pie-selling team in your workplace to win prizes and the satisfaction of knowing your efforts helped feed neighbors in need.

Not to add stress to your day, but if you are in the market for a new D.C. condo priced for first-time buyers, then you had better postpone whatever it is you are doing and make an appointment to see Eight 39, located at 839 Kennedy Street NW.

Constructed with the kind of modern style and sophistication that are the hallmarks of functional urban living, the Petworth residence is, as they say in the business, a hot commodity.

There are only 31 units, each outfitted with sleek, contemporary details, such as Porcelanosa bathroom tiles, modern two-tone cabinetry, exotic quartz kitchen countertops and complimentary luxury finishes throughout. Outside of the wide variety of one- and two-bedroom floor plans — truly, there are a LOT of layouts — the building itself provides additional high-end space for a balanced lifestyle, with city views from a rooftop deck, a fitness room and yoga studio, common outdoor areas and a dog wash station.
