On Saturday, June 18, come join your neighbors in for the 14th Annual Columbia Heights Day!

After a few years hiatus, District Bridges is bringing back this beloved community festival. Rather than a street closure, there will be four activation zones throughout the neighborhood, each celebrating a unique element of Columbia Heights.

At each zone, neighbors can enjoy local food and vendors, live music, and family friendly entertainment. In addition to the zones, neighborhood businesses will be activating right outside their storefronts.

“Our goal for this festival is to celebrate all Columbia Heights has to offer with fun, engaging activities throughout the entire neighborhood on June 18th”, says Brianne Dornbush, Executive Director of District Bridges. “For the last few years, supporting our communities has looked like staying home and connecting virtually to keep ourselves and our neighbors safe through the pandemic. But now, as we are able to start gathering in person again, we are thrilled to be able to create events like Columbia Heights Day where residents and visitors can meet and connect once again.”

The 2022 Columbia Heights Day Festival will be held from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 18 and is sponsored by Amazon, Eddie Suarez, Helbiz, Bird, and District Church (as of May, 13).

Well-Paid Maids is coming up on five years in business here in the D.C. area.

Founder Aaron Seyedian created the business to prove that companies can pay living wages and be successful — even in traditionally low-paying industries. (Point proved!)

We often highlight important company numbers. For instance, Well-Paid Maids pays employees a starting wage of $22 an hour, provides 22 paids days off per year and pays 100% of employee commuting costs.

But here are some fun numbers you may not have seen…

  • 25 full-time employees
  • 25 fully vaccinated employees
  • 10,040 homes cleaned
  • 4,417 repeat customers
  • 200 regular customers (approximately)
  • 3,000+ new furry friends made (i.e. homes cleaned with pets)
  • 80 5-star Yelp reviews
  • $1,292,000 and counting in total living wages paid
  • 1,000+ PTO days logged
  • $6 starting wage increase since starting (from $16 to $22 an hour)

If you’re interested in getting your home professionally cleaned — and want to support a good cause — book a Well-Paid Maids visit online.

On May 21, Open Streets will be on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., SE for the first time — the first in a series of Open Streets events in 2022.

During the event, the District will close Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE, between Good Hope Rd. SE and Morris Rd. SE to cars. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the corridor will be open to residents and visitors to walk, bike, run, scooter, roller skate, hop, skip and enjoy the open streets. Opportunities to support local businesses and participate in a range of activities such as demonstrations, health and clean air discussions, fitness classes, and other educational and entertainment programming will be part of the Open Streets — Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. experience.

“Especially over the past year and a half, we have seen residents and businesses work together to reimagine public space and Open Streets is one more opportunity to rethink how we use our streets and sidewalks,” said Mayor Bowser. “We have a beautiful city, we have a community that is excited for the opportunity to come back together and to support local businesses.”

Open Streets is presented by Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). Anacostia BID (www.anacostiabid.org) is the nonprofit partner supporting the planning and execution of the event.
