We’ve talked about dry cleaners from time to time. I’m a devotee of OXXO’s neighbor in Columbia Heights, Georgetown Dry Cleaners both across from the Giant on Park Rd. But I have to say I’m always mesmerized by the automatic pickup machine at the OXXO. Does it work well? How are the prices?

And what do you think Kwame Brown had to do to get his sign in the window?

I think the courtyard of the Union Row condos looks awesome. The condos are located on 14th St. between V and W and this is a pretty sweet location that should be factored in for “good deal or not”. Apparently there are two types of condos – The Flats and The Warehouses. The Flats prices range from studios in the high $200s, one bedrooms from mid $400s and two bedrooms, the upper $400s and two bedrooms/dens from the upper $500s.

The Warehouse has single level units from the high $300s, 1.5 level units from the upper $400s and 2.5 levels from the low $700s. If anyone can find interior pictures be sure to post the link in the comments. But this is a new building so I’m sure it looks nice. Now have at it, good deal or not?

People are frequently writing me emails asking for suggestions on Bed and Breakfast places to have their folks or friends stay at. So I walked past this Adam’s Inn near Adams Morgan of course and it got me thinking about the question again. Has anyone stayed here or had family stay here? But for our neighborhoods of Petworth, Columbia Heights, Mt. Pleasant, Shaw and the rest can you recommend any Bed and Breakfast spots?

I was able to get lots of information from the owners of this garden. This is how they did it:

“To build the wall, we had to fill and level the yard, which required multiple trips to Home Depot for bags of topsoil and clay breaker, and many hours (and a few fights) digging and mixing. We ordered the stone (1.1 tons of it!!) for the stacked stone wall from a place out in Maryland and built the wall ourselves in a few hours, with the help of my handy father-in law. We laid the sod ourselves and planted all the flowers ourselves. There was some trial and error, and I ended up ripping out everything that was in the lower level last fall after planting way too many coreopsis that took over. And I should add that neither of us had ever done any gardening, ever, so there was a lot of winging it and guessing involved. We did it all for under $1500, probably, even including all the stuff that got ripped out and replaced.

This year, everything is really filling in and looking great. The vines – Carolina jessamine, several types of clematis, and two kinds of honeysuckle. The jessamine is blooming now, although the rain may’ve done it in, and the front of our trellis is all bright yellow flowers. I redid the lower level on Saturday with some phlox and some more day lilies. We’ll have to make another trip to Behnke’s because we underestimated.”

Check out another angle after the jump. And of course if you have gardens that you’re proud of shoot me an email. (more…)

I haven’t heard this much (cyber)excitement since the Target opening. Thanks to a reader for alerting me this morning to the opening. The store is located at 17th and Kalorama Rd, NW. So I’m embarassed to say I’m not too familiar with Harris Teeter. Is it better than a Target opening? Or as far as groceries stores are concerned is it better than a Giant?

From a press release:

“Mayor Adrian M. Fenty on Thursday, April 24, 2008, will announce a new development plan that will generate operating support for the Lincoln Theatre and provide new amenities for the U Street neighborhood. The Mayor will also provide an update on several other projects along the corridor.”

Anyone know what they are referring to regarding the “other projects along the corridor”? Has anyone been to the Lincoln Theater?

What is that material? And do you like it as a finished building material?
