Do you think this is a factor in deciding whether or not to purchase a particular house. Would you ever think – man, that’s a lot of steps to be walking up and down everyday? I know we’ve discussed the long steps in the backyards of some Mt. Pleasant homes and what a pain in the ass it must be to carry the garbage cans up and down. But what about a lengthy front stairway – would you think twice about purchasing a home with an entrance like this?

I noticed this garden had a can and some aluminum foil type paper surrounding the perimeter of their garden. I’d never seen this before. Does anyone else have some tips on how to keep their garden vermin free?

I learned that they are doing an environmentally friendly deconstruction. I’m told that they “are currently “deconstructing” the building as opposed to demolishing it, with the intent to recycle, reuse, or otherwise divert the debris from the landfill.” Pretty cool. It also means we are one step closer to John Andrade’s new bar – Meridian Pint. Sweet.

My quest to feature every single shop on U Street continues! Junction Village, located at 1510 U Street, has been open for almost five years and is owned by Shannon Fales. I spoke with sales associate Megan. Megan describes Junction Village as a small vintage store that is very well edited. She explained that they pick their pieces locally and occassionally on trips from all over the country. They generally go shopping on Monday and Tuesday so that new products are in the store on Wednesday. The store features men’s and women’s clothing as well as jewelry, accessories, and some luggage. The clothing is a mixture of thrift and higher quality vintage. All the clothing is cleaned and repaired before it is placed for sale. Dresses range from $30-$50, skirts from $20-$30 and men’s shirts from $20-$30. Of course high end designers are a bit pricier. The store is closed Monday and Tuesday and open Wed. from 3-7 pm, Thurs – Sat. 12-7 pm and Sun. 12-5 pm. If you are into vintage this a very cool place to check out. Check out some more photos after the jump. (more…)

Well, this is disappointing. I saw this on a listserv:

“Jun 23, 2008 3:00 AM (6 hrs ago) by Bill Myers, The Examiner

http://www.examiner.com/a-1454154~Contract_dispute_stalls_senior_center.html
WASHINGTON -Construction on an $8 million senior center in Northwest has ground to a halt in a dispute over late payments, chaotic city management and a favored plumbing contractor, The Examiner has learned.

After 11 months of fighting, D.C. has terminated Garcete Construction Co.’s contract for the wellness center on the 3500 block of Georgia Avenue Northwest. The dispute, which is now headed for litigation, has stalled a decade-long plan for the facility.”

Hey PoP,

I bought my house in Petworth almost 6 years ago and love it here. However, my neighbors have apparently abandoned their house, which is next to mine in my row, and now their backyard is overrun with rats and covered in waist high weeds. I have complained to the city, both about the rats, and about having an empty house with broken windows filled to the ceiling with trash and boxes. So far, nothing has been done and no one from the Fenty administration or any city agency has gotten back to me. Do you or anyone have any advice about how to proceed?

Fed Up

Dear Fed Up,

Man, just reading the word rat is disturbing. I’d be terribly pissed if an abandoned neighbor’s backyard was teeming with them. There was some good advice given on a previous Dear PoP about an abandoned house that you should check out. In the short term, and I know there is no justice in this recommendation, I’d mow the lawn myself or pay someone to mow the lawn. I think I’ve heard rats like the high growth so even though it is not your responsibility it may be in your best interest to do so. I would relentlessly call your ANC representative as well as Council Member Muriel Bowser’s office to see if they can help. It may be worthwhile to talk to some of your other neighbors and have them call as well. If nobody from those numbers can help email me again directly and we’ll see what other steps can be taken. Maybe we can shame the city with photographic evidence. Anyone else have any recommendations?

Good luck to you,
PoP

Well we can now add Mt. Pleasant to the infamous list of collaborators. My war on squirrels has been well documented. You could imagine my surprise and disgust when I spotted this sign in the heart of Mt. Pleasant. At first I thought it was a random sign displayed at one house but then I noticed them all over Mt. Pleasant. I hate to quote President Bush but you’re either with us or against us on this one. Aux Armes!

I’m sorry I thought this was an odd and hilarious sight. I mean there were like 10 or 12 tree stumps here in a really odd pattern. Maybe they could paint them and have some wild modern art, yeah? I think I saw some clubbed seals in the backyard but I couldn’t get a good photo…

So why would someone need to demolish an entire rowhouse like this? Are they normally gutted and renovated? What would be the reason for a total demolition like this?

Thanks to a reader for sending the news that they spotted “The Childrens’ Place” in one of the DC USA storefronts yesterday.  Is this just like a clothing store for kids or are there also toys?  Who knows the story here?
