Is this what they call a land shark?

Of course it’s the porthole window that got my attention.

This is perhaps the freshest porch furniture I’ve seen in a while. Borderline too nice for the porch, yeah? All you need is the Sunday newspaper and some beverages and you’re in business.

Anyone recognize the block?

I’ve always wondered if people would prefer a skinny three floor row home or a wider two floor row home. Any preferences here?

The flier for this home at 1314 Girard Street says:
“Unique home w/ contemp/traditional flair! This one has something for everyone. Expansive LR/DR w/ banded parquet hrdwd flrs, Dynamite kitchen w/ custom euro cabs, cork flrs, Amazing MBR suite w/ clawfoot soaking tub/shower, exposed brick, secluded rear yrd w/ fish pond, off str pk, In-law suite rented for $900/mo, Metro, Target, Tivoli, Giant 3/4 blks.”
More details can be found here.
Pretty cool house with a basement rental. So is $685,000 a good deal or not?

“Greetings, PoPpers.
Who manages the distribution of love to the treeboxes and little patches of green on our sidewalks? If you look West of 16th street there are cute railings, grass, and all is generally well manicured. Logan Circle is more of the same. Then there’s Columbia Heights where things are dire.
Does the city maintain these? How are some gorgeous and some are craptastic? If it is the city how do we show the ugly streets of Columbia Heights some much needed horticultural love?”
Anyone know who is in charge of fixing up treeboxes?
I was dismayed to receive the following note from a very good friend of mine:
“Yesterday my fiancée and I walked out of Whole Foods with our arms around each other, and when we stopped at the intersection of 15th and P to wait for the light to change, I kissed her cheek. Behind us, a man commently loudly, “you shouldn’t do that in public.” Upon turning around to gauge whether he was serious or joking, the woman with him laughed and said “he’s just jealous.” As we started to walk across the street, we heard the same voice, this time with unmistakable disgust say, “you’re a waste of two good women.”
This is not the first time a passerby has felt it was his right (thus far, comments have only come from men) to insult us because we are two women walking hand-in-hand, yet every time it happens, it catches me off guard. My initial reaction has always been that the person must be joking or that I must not have heard him correctly.
By the time we got home I was holding back tears – tears of hurt, yes, but also of frustration that I hadn’t realized he was serious earlier than I did and that I hadn’t had a witty comeback to throw at him so that he might have left that corner the one who was embarrassed.
So my question to the PoP readers is: What would you have said in this situation (if you were me, or one of the 5 or 6 other people also waiting on that corner)? Has a similar situation ever happened to you?”
Well, believe it not PoP is almost two years old. So I thought I’d start a new post highlighting some good finds from a year (or two) ago. By the by, there is going to be a huge two year PoP anniversary party Nov. 13th at Wonderland featuring the bands Milk Machine and O’Tasty (and potentially one more). So mark your calendars. T-shirts with the new logo will be unveiled.
So, one year ago today:
I discussed the merits of putting bricks under window air conditioner units.
I found a decent Pop up (warning, there is vinyl involved).
I checked out Java & Cream up in north country which I think, sadly, has closed.
