I thought this back to a row house of 11th Street near Logan Circle looked terrific. Great big windows. It looks like the home may have been converted to condos. I was also struck how traditional the home looks from the front, you’d never guess it was so “modern” from the back. I’m also curious what you think of balconies that overlook an alley? Do you think that’d be a pleasant spot to hang out?

This home is located at 1112 Monroe Street, NW:

The flier says:

“Beautifully restored home mixes wonderful original details w/ modern conveniences. Wide-open floorplan boasts orig hrdwd flrs, mantel, moldings, with new kitchens and baths. Granite, stainless steel, maple cabinets, travertine. The basement has great ceiling height and includes an in-law suite complete with a large bedroom, kitchenette, living room, windows, walk-out. Parking, deck!”

More info and a virtual tour found here.

The house itself is pretty sweet. What I’m curious is what you think about being across the street from the little park at the corner of 11th and Monroe? It is sometimes filled with men drinking and loitering. Though sometimes it’s filled with children and I know certain residents coordinate bringing their kids to the playground. And who knows what this park will look like in 5 years? Do you think the park should be a factor in the price? Anyway, what do you think of the house itself? Does $574,900 sound reasonable?

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

“Dear PoP,

The previously discussed Argonne Cafe (http://www.princeofpetworth.com/2009/04/judging-cafes/)  seems to have disappeared, but in it’s place has sprung up Pica Taco.

Looks like they may have just opened today. Was told the menu is still a “rough draft” and would probably change some – but it includes various Tacos ($2.00 each) and Burritos ($4.50 to $6.50).  They also seem to have kept some of Argonne Cafe’s items – there’s a breakfast selection that looks kind of familiar.

Most interesting part – sounds like they may have Ceviche on the weekends. No word on price yet, but we were told to check back.

Hours run until 8pm weeknights according to the door, and they’re open all day Saturday.

Didn’t try the food, since we had just eaten, but I will admit to being kind of excited about this being around the corner from my front door.”

Very cool.  Anyone taste the Ceviche?  Anyone gonna miss Argonne Cafe?

I am happy to report that I have confirmed that the hugely successful (and delicious) Taylor’s Deli is opening up a second location in Mt. Vernon Triangle at City Vista (5th and L, NW). Taylor’s of course is the Philly style sandwich shop that opened up in Nov. at 1116 H St. NE. Well mad props to the folks at City Vista because now they can add to their hugely successful list of retail spots which already includes the “Sexy Safeway”, 5th Street Hardware, Busboys & Poets, and who knows what else is in the works.

The new Taylor’s hopes to open around October. Great score for Mt. Vernon Triangle.

“Dear PoP,

New to the neighborhood. Can’t help but notice how many cars have been broken into along Florida Ave. between 11th and 13th along the south wall of Cardozo. As well as on 11th Street, just to the east of Cardozo. I walk this way every morning to work, and invariably, one or two cars have had their back or front windows shattered. Take a walk down Florida. Window glass is everywhere. Does anyone have any idea whether it’s students or who the culprits may be? Seems unusual the number of break ins, but maybe I’m just being naive to the extent of crime in the neighborhood.”

Holy cow, I walked across Florida Ave and there were at least 8 different spots with broken windows. I get word of the occasional car break in but I’ve never seen so many so closely clustered. Anyone care to speculate? Do people simply leave items in their car in this area? Do you think it’s students?

If I had to guess I’d say it was probably thieves rather than vandals. Has anyone had their car broken into at this spot? Can you confirm if anything was stolen? Notice any other streets in town that have frequent clustered window smashings?

Some more photos of different spots after the jump. (more…)
