Sangria Cafe is located at 3636 16th St NW. Here’s another one I’ve always been curious about. It is so nondescript you could easily walk right past it without realizing it’s there. I know there are fans of the Woodner building, so any fans of the Sangria Cafe? Is it more of a restaurant or bar?

From the CH Listserv:

“This morning around 9:40 a.m. a coworker was walking north on 14th Street near the east side entrance to the CH Metro. As she passed the crowded bus stop at that location a man “sidekicked” her hard in the shin and then turned around as if nothing had happened. She confronted him and he ignored her. Others saw the incident and called the police. One man followed the “kicker” as he left the area heading north on 14th and turning east on Kenyon. The Metro Express newspaper man said that the same man had been there the day before and had kicked another woman.

If this happens to you, please report it to the police, and know that it’s part of a series of aberrant behavior by this man.”

Anyone else hear of this happening? I don’t know why, but it bothers me even more when incidents like this occur at 9:40 in the morning. Sounds like we need more heroes like this one.

“Dear PoP,

We want to take our two-year-old to her first fireworks show. Because it’s after her bedtime, and because she might freak out, we’d like to stay in the hood. Where around here can we see the fireworks, and still have a quick escape route for the tyke?”

Well assuming you’re talking about Petworth, you can pretty much go to any corner from New Hampshire and Georgia up to Kennedy Street and everywhere in between. But there’s also great street shows all over Columbia Heights and H Street, NE as well. Personally I love watching the mall fireworks at Cardozo High School, at 13th Street and Clifton, mixed with the nearby street shows. But for the folks who have little children do you have any recommendations? And I guess just in general, where are your favorite spots to watch the mall and/or neighborhood fireworks shows?

Back in mid June I mentioned Pete’s Apizza was going to start delivery soon. Well, soon is July 7th. Very good news!

From an email:

“Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza will start delivering on Tuesday, July 7, at 5PM. Delivery hours will be from 5 to close (10PM Sunday through Thursday, 11PM Friday and Saturday).

Delivery area will be limited for an initial period while the store gets acclimated to the pace and scope of deliveries. We plan to start off with the following boundaries:

16th Street to the west
Upshur Street to the north
Georgia Avenue to New Hampshire Avenue to Sherman Avenue to the east
U Street to the south.

Depending on the situation, we are reserving the right to limit delivery area further, if we find during our initial break-in period that we are having difficulty maintaining delivery times and customer satisfaction. This is the first time we have offered the service, so we are not sure how long it will take to get acclimated to a whole new system. Every driver on day one will be on their first day on the job, week one, first week on the job, etc. Hopefully, it will launch smoothly, but it is a new venture.

After the initial period, it is our hope to extend the delivery area further into Petworth, since we get a lot of in-store customers from Petworth, and Joel and Alicia, two of the co-owners, live in the neighborhood.

Because we are a restaurant first and foremost, and not primarily a delivery place, we will be charging $3 per address for delivery.

Anyone up there have a really nice little crap car they want to sell for $400 or so? I’ve been looking at older Saturns, Corollas, Sentras and Civics. I delivered pizza all through high school and a couple summers in college. I might be doing it again! But I won’t kill my trusty old Volvo wagon doing it.”

“Saw two new castmembers on Riggs and 14th walking down the street being filmed.”

Granted it’s a bit spotty but it’s the first photo I’ve seen. Anyone else seen filming going on?

When we last discussed the arrival of MTV’s Real World DC folks were a bit concerned that they were going to ruin the neighborhoods. So now that they are here has anyone noticed any difference in their neighborhoods? Any other sightings?

“This is the corner of Maple View and High in Anacostia. Don’t know the name of the abandoned public housing complex, but the neighborhood has been trying for years to get the city to demolish this junk. The guerilla art tactic is new. I guess that’s a reference to Jacob’s Ladder? My theology is a little thin.”

Well this certainly seems like a good Horse’s Ass Award nominee. I can’t say I dig the art too much but I respect the effort. Think it’s a Jacob’s Ladder reference? What’s it gonna take to get this run down complex demolished?

I really like finding ones that are able to compliment gardens and grass. I normally find only one or the other. Nicely done here.
