I’m the brother of Amanda Mahnke, who was jogging on Connecticut at Florida on September 3 when she was hit by a Metrobus. She is recovering from serious injuries. I’m very grateful to the people who came to my sister’s aid that morning, and I would like to talk to anyone who was there. If you could post something encouraging people who were there, or who know someone who was there, to e-mail me (rm2159570 at gmail dot com), I would be appreciative. Since WTOP created some confusion on the point, I’d also like to mention there is no basis for the notion that Amanda was wearing earbuds that morning. Not that it should make a difference — joggers who are wearing earbuds should be safe from buses, too.”

Dear PoP – Is there a Train Near Adams Morgan/Woodley Park?

“Dear PoP,

Any ideas on why a train can sometimes be heard near Adams Morgam/Woodley? Where is this train??”

I asked a similar question back in May ’07. At that time I inquired about hearing a train from my home in Petworth. I was told that I was “hearing trains on the track that runs along the Red Line metro track parallel to North Capitol and then along Blair to Silver Spring.”

Anyone know what train you can hear from Adams Morgan/Woodley Park? Is it the same one?

I really love the floors on the second floor here. I’m also a huge fan of the bay window on the first floor. The location is pretty tight as well. However, I’m always a little concerned by “As Is” sales, but it doesn’t look like it needs much work from the photos. Does $715,000 sound reasonable for this 3 bed/1.5 bath?

Fiesta DC in Mt. P Filled With Good Times and Tons of People

I can’t believe this is the first Fiesta DC I’ve attended. It was a blast. There was tons of good food, music, parades and most importantly good vibes. My only problem was that it was perhaps a bit too crowded. As I’m only 5’6″ on a good day I had a tough time seeing the parade. Besides the parade and great food, I’d say my highlight was winning a Goya baseball cap. What’d you guys think? Good times? What was your favorite part?

Shooting at 13th and Euclid Friday Night?

“Dear PoP,

Hey there, did you happen to hear anything about a homicide in front of a townhouse on 13th st, just a few doors down from euclid on the east side (and close to the terminus of that early august car chase)?

my girlfriend walked by there friday night, and there were cops all over the place and the area was taped off. staffers from the medical examiner’s office were taking photos of a body at the top of the stairs going up to the townhouse. as of last night, there were still multiple police cars and a small police truck — possibly some sort of forensics unit.”

I actually haven’t heard anything about this incident. Did anyone else happen to hear/see what happened? I know there has been trouble from time to time on 14th and Euclid, but I rarely hear of any problems at 13th and Euclid. If anyone happened to catch a report on a listserv please leave the info in the comments. Thanks.

Does the New Dog Park at 17th and S Streets, NW Stink? Literally.

The new dog park at 17th and S Streets, NW has only been open for a few weeks but I’ve already received a number of emails about it. I’m told that, perhaps due to the rain, the park can be smelled from a block away. I walked by Sunday afternoon to ask some pedestrians and folks in the park what they thought. Every single person I spoke to said the park did not smell particularly bad, with or without the rain. One woman in the park told me she lived half a block away and has never had a problem with the odor. For me, I’d say it did smell a bit of wet dog. But as someone else told me at the park – “it probably smelled of wet dog because there are tons of wet dogs in the park”. However the funniest comment came from someone who said, it doesn’t smell like wet dog, rather “it smells of dog shit near the entrances where the trash cans are filled with dog shit”. Ah, very good point. Indeed the entrance did have an overpowering smell of dog shit. But the question remains – can you smell the park from a block away? For those that live nearby – is the smell overwhelming? Do you think it has anything to do with the rain and/or artificial surface?
