I would like to find a local charity to donate some money. Does anyone have any suggestions for local charities in the Petworth/Columbia Heights/Shaw/U St./Mt.Pleasant neighborhoods? When a number of suggestions have been submitted we will then vote on which one to donate to. Now here’s where you come in: I would like you to donate to the charity as well and I will match donations up to a total of $500. Hopefully that way, together we can donate a $1000 to a local charity. So which local charity would you like to nominate?

As regular readers of this blog know, I’m often taking photos of interesting lawn art/sculptures that are often animals. So as I was walking up 11th Street near R I wasn’t too stunned to see what I thought was some more lawn art. Alas, what I saw was very different. And I’m still a little shaken up so forgive me if I curse a little bit in recounting this experience. So I’m admiring this “art” when I think to myself this is really an odd spot to place the piece. At this point I notice some feathers flying and I think “hmm this is weird.” Then the “sculpture” turns its head towards me and I jump about 10 feet straight up in the air. Holy shit, that is a freaking HAWK. Yeah, you read correctly a hawk…on 11th Street! When I fell back down to the ground, I rubbed my eyes and took a closer look again. At this point the hawk is staring at me and I could easily see from it’s eyes that it was telling me to back the fuck up. And back up I did. You see at this point I saw that it was sitting on something and I was like “damn it’s a mom and is sitting on its babies.” Uh, no. That was not the case. The hawk had just killed a pigeon…on 11th Street. A hawk. Insane. After the jump are a couple more photos one with a better view of the recently deceased. (more…)

I had the opportunity to speak with Bert Keller, owner of Bentleys, who was nice enough to let me peek inside the shop and take some photos. The shop should be open in the next few weeks but if you are walking by and see Bert inside I’m sure he’d be happy to let you in to take a look as well. When the store officially opens the hours will be Wed. Thurs. Fri. 11am-6pm and Sat. Sun. 12-6pm. This place reminds me a lot of Ruff & Ready Furnishings on 14th Street. Keller told me he gets his items from flea markets, garage sales, auctions as well as from little towns he travels to. Keller, certainly has lots of enthusiasm and is very excited about being in Petworth. Keller’s prices are negotiable but he prides himself on passing on great values to the customer. He said “I’m only looking to pay rent and cover the overhead then I just want to see the customers enjoy the pieces”. You’ll be able to tell from the photos after the jump but the items here range in a wide variety from knick knacks to furniture. In the future Keller hopes to expand the number of furniture pieces available.
I think this is a great addition to the neighborhood and particularly to Upshur Street. Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

In October, I posted about this building when it had just posted its “half sold!!” banner. Well now it’s practically March, so at what point do you stop celebrating that it is “half sold” and say “oh shit, it’s only half sold”?
So I dropped in on an oscar themed costume party on Saturday night. I’m not really a costume or dress up person so I went in my regular street clothes. And I won second place for best costume. I’m not sure if that is compliment or an insult…

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve received a few emails about folks who have gotten the cars broken into. And when I was walking down 11th St near Irving St. I came across this unfortunate scene. This is a car from someone who was visiting from Connecticut. I asked the owner if anything was stolen and an ipod and satellite radio were taken. So this sucks. But my suggestion would be: when you park your car don’t leave anything, I mean anything that can even be perceived as having value in your car. If you leave an old Billy Idol cd in view that might be enough to get your window smashed.

I kept hanging around hoping they’d pick me as an extra but alas no luck. I couldn’t get a clear answer but I think the group is called “Lifeblood”.

The neon palm tree sealed the deal.
