Kingman Island Day

WHEN: Saturday, April 25, 2009

10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

WHAT: Kingman Island Day is a one-of-a-kind event that gives local youth a chance to explore Washington DC’s virtually undiscovered urban parks at Kingman and Heritage Islands, which combined have created a 50 acre playground open for adventure. This first time ever event will bring community residents and organizations together to enjoy live entertainment, a free lunch and engage in restoration service projects. Almost 20 exhibitors will offer hands-on activities, displays, and eco-friendly education on the island.

WHY: The event is a unique chance for the community, its youth and partner organizations to actively impact the natural environment while learning in a fun, interactive way. Kingman Island Day will also give community members and elected officials an opportunity to see firsthand the tremendous progress already made in restoring the park, and celebrate exciting future plans for the island and the community.

Family Fun Event at National Harbor

I’m getting in touch today on behalf of the National Children’s Museum (NCM), a DC-based interactive museum for children designed to inspire them to care about and improve our world, scheduled to open in 2013 at National Harbor.

While the $2 billion permanent space for the NCM is in development, I wanted to share news of and invite you and your family to the grand opening of the NCM’s Launch Zone at National Harbor – a brand new 2,700 square-foot temporary NCM space at 112 Waterfront Street – this weekend on April 25 and 26, from 11 am- 4 pm.

The Launch Zone will be open to the public seven days a week, and using images, table-top interactive exhibits, and computer kiosks, will offer children and families the opportunity to experience exhibit components and programs, share their ideas about what should be included in the new Museum, and participate in fun and educational programs related to the Museum’s core content areas. The Launch Zone will also host ongoing area Museum Without Walls programming, professional development workshops and trainings, and community learning events for parents and caregivers.

On Saturday, April 25, festivities will feature recycled art activities, face painting, chalk art, and food. Additionally, The Adventures of Wally the Water Bottle, an original, interactive performance by the Museum, will take place throughout the day at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m.

On Sunday, April 26, the celebration continues with recycled and chalk art activities, face painting, balloon creations, treats, and a special performance – Sea Revels – by cultural performance organization, the Washington Revels. Performances will take place at the Main Stage at National Harbor at 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
