“The Bowser Administration and DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) are launching a new Youth Hockey Development Program at the DPR Fort Dupont Ice Arena, giving young people ages 8–13 an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of skating and hockey in a structured, supportive environment.
The program,
offered in partnership with legendary hockey coach and Fort Dupont Cannons founder Neal Henderson, will introduce young skaters to the sport through a two-phase progression beginning with foundational skating skills before advancing to hockey fundamentals, including stick handling, passing, shooting, positioning, and teamwork.
The program also marks the return of the Fort Dupont Cannons to the arena. Founded by Henderson in 1978, the Cannons are recognized as the oldest Black hockey program in North America and have played a historic role in expanding opportunities and changing the culture of hockey.
“Access opens doors, and sometimes that first opportunity is all a young person needs to discover something they love,” said DPR Director Thennie Freeman. “This program is about putting young people on the ice, building their confidence, and making sure they see themselves in a sport that has not always been accessible to everyone. We are proud to partner with Coach Neal Henderson and continue the legacy of the Fort Dupont Cannons.”
The Youth Hockey Development Program will run October 5 through January 23, with sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00–8:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
The program is open to youth ages 8–13. The resident fee is $150, and the non-resident fee is $250.
A mandatory orientation for all participants and parents will take place Saturday, October 3, from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. at the DPR Fort Dupont Ice Arena. The orientation will cover program expectations, equipment needs, safety procedures, and the two-phase program progression.
