Thanks to ANC Commissioner Charquinta McCray for sending us an update on the closing plans for the Safeway at Hechinger Mall:
“what we know so far:
•The pharmacy will close on April 1,
with prescriptions being transferred to the Safeway on Capitol Hill (1415 14th Street SE).
•The store will officially close on May 16, though some staff may remain temporarily to support closure operations.
•The H Street/Hechinger Mall ownership group is actively seeking a replacement grocer, but no confirmed progress has been made yet.
•For the foreseeable future, Aldi will be the only grocery store in the immediate area, which we all recognize is not sufficient to meet the community’s needs.”
