“Once again the Zoning Commission votes to add delay and expense to much-needed housing
Zoning Commission votes 5-0 to delay approval until at least October 23
For over 10 years, the lot at 901 Monroe St NE in Brookland has sat vacant, even though it’s across the street from the Brookland Metro station, five blocks from a grocery store, and surrounded by local businesses. This prime location could provide much-needed housing in Ward 5, yet it has remained empty due to restrictive zoning and a few loud voices opposing change.
On Thursday, September 11, the Zoning Commission voted to once again delay the 230 homes planned for this project and ordered the developer to “sculpt” the massing, which may lead to a reduction in future homes. The first hearing on this version of the project was on June 23rd, meaning a four-month delay if it is finally approved on October 23rd.
Ignores the stated wishes of the community and Advisory Neighborhood Commissions
The project has the clear support of the community. The ANC 901 Monroe is located in (5B) and the next-closest ANC (5F) have both voted to support it, and over 40 letters of support from community members have been received by the Zoning Commission.
Trump Administration Commissioner argues apartments across the street from Metro should be located “closer to the Metro station”
Commissioner Tammy Stidham, one of two Federal Appointees to the Zoning Commission, argued “If this project was located a few blocks away, closer to the Metro Station, where things are taller, it would make more sense. But it’s not.”
This is an odd claim, since 901 Monroe St NE is directly across the street from the Brookland Metro Station and a bus terminal.”
