Local writing nonprofit 826DC is looking for teams to participate in Paddlestar Galactica, a low-key ping-pong tournament supporting their free youth writing programs. This year, there’s also a pickleball option! No matter which game you choose, you’ll be making a big difference for DC students and their teachers.
826DC offers free writing workshops, homework help, and publishing projects for DC students ages 6-18, in their Columbia Heights writing center and in learning spaces across the city.
Paddlestar Galactica helps keep these programs 100% free and accessible for all students! It’s also a ton of fun for players of all skill levels.
How it works: Participants race to raise as many donations as they can before the tournament, which can then “buy” all sorts of absurd advantages during the games. You can make your opponent use a flyswatter for a paddle, you can shower them with ping-pong balls, etc.
This year’s games will be Saturday, March 29th, 12:30 PM to 4 PM at Kraken Kourts & Skates (514 Rhode Island Ave NE).
It’ll be a chaotic afternoon full of ping-pong, pickleball, costumes, terrible Battlestar Galactica puns, free drinks for those 21+, and tons of prizes. We’d love to have you there!
You can participate as a solo player or as a team of any size. Fundraising is already underway, so sign up ASAP at bit.ly/paddlestar11 to save your spot and get a headstart on the competition…
