It’s the Return of the Farmer’s Market on U Street this Saturday!

The market is located right on the corner of 14th and U and is open from 9am to 1pm. The note from Robin on the listserv says:

“Strawberries, Asparagus, Flowers, greens, plants and much more!

Yes, we have Strawberries already!

New producer Dana Boyle started picking her strawberries (Chandlers and Sweet Charleys)
last week. The days have been hot and dry so she tells me they are good and sweet.
Yum. She is from the Northern Neck, Virginia where strawberries ripen a few weeks before
they do around DC so we can start the strawberry season early at U Street! More details after the jump.

Asparagus:

Spring is Asparagus season and we will have lots of recipes for you. You will find
asparagus at Truck Patch, Kuhn, Mountain View, Garner, and McCleaf.

Mother’s Day’s Flowers at U Street

Elaine is bringing gorgeous flowers that will be only hours old from her two acres in Great
Falls:Yellow, pink and Salmon Tulips,, large Alliums in purple and white, “Dutch” Iris, White
and Yellow Lilies, Sweet William, Ox-eye Daisies, Hesperis and Agrostemma (corn cockle).
Her flowers always have a long vase life because they are so fresh.

Greens:

We will have LOTS of salad and cooking greens at Truck Patch, Mountain View, and
Garners. Beautiful spicy Spring Mix, arugula, mesclun, romaine and other lettuces, baby
lettuce mix, braising greens (mustards and Asians), Stir-Fry Mix, Green and Purple
Mizuna, kale (THREE kinds), collards, chard, turnip greens.

Pastured Meat:

Truck Patch will have sausage, pork chops, pork loin, shoulder roasts, spare ribs, baby
back, tenderloins. Their eggs will sell out early.

What else will you find?

Green Tomatoes…. to make Fried Green Tomatoes and Green Tomato Chutney. Ever try St.
Ex’s Green Tomato BLT? You can make it yourself this weekend. Breadline’s breads and
croissants and muffins and cookies. Kuhn’s and McCleaf’s rhubarb to cook up with those
strawberries and some very tasty apples. This time of year they bring Fuji, Goldrush and
Pink Lady, Golden and Red Delicious to market. ( Want some peaches? Try Kuhn’s own
canned peaches.) Honey, too. Green Garlic (make Green Garlic Pesto). English Walnuts at
McCleaf. (I prefer using walnuts with Green Garlic, shoots, onions and mint….or make
soup of it. Radishes, spring onions

And we will have lots of plants for your gardens and windows: tomato plants including
heirlooms, basil, herbs, lettuces, greens, flowers, hanging baskets)”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
