Brookland has occupied an interesting place in D.C. history. Later it acquired the nickname “Little Rome” because of the nearly 60 Catholic institutions that grew up around around the Catholic University of America. These days, Brookland is probably best known to District residents as the home of the Monroe Street Market, a mixed-use development that includes an “Arts Walk” of dozens of artists’ studios as well as restaurants, cafes, and a Barnes & Noble bookstore.

You can get a taste of the neighborhood this Saturday at Best of Brookland. Put together by Gallery Towns, a new community of townhomes by Bozzuto Homes at Monroe Street Market, Best of Brookland will treat visitors to food and drink from some of the area’s favorite hang outs, including Busboys and Poets, Halsa, Brookland’s Finest, and the Dewdrop Inn. Brookland Pint will welcome guests to a beer garden, with community sponsors including Barnes and Noble, CUA, Dance Place, and A Creative DC.

And if you like music, you’re in luck. Best of Brookland will feature the roots rock of South Rail and the “blue collar rock ‘n’ roll” of the Low Counts.

Visit the Best of Brookland website and RSVP via Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or email. The event starts this Saturday, October 17, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Sweet City Ride

Thanks to L. for sending this beautiful 98 Olds. Sweet City Ride is made possible by readers like you!

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
