Looking for a unique and environmentally friendly stocking stuffer this holiday? The DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU), a partnership formed to help D.C. residents make smart energy choices, is offering a promotion that will help lower your energy bills as you give back to the community.

Here’s how it works: If you buy a discounted LED bulb at a participating online retailer, the DCSEU will donate a bulb to So Others Might Eat (SOME), a community-based organization that works to help the District’s poor and homeless. SOME plans to distribute the LED bulbs with holiday food baskets to their clients in need. Using an LED light is one of the most effective ways to save energy, requiring the least amount of time, effort and money. The bulbs use 15 percent less electricity than CFLs and 85 percent less electricity than incandescent light bulbs.

You can buy your bulbs at either TechniArt.com, Costco.com, or 1000bulbs.com between now and January 1. So give yourself, and someone in need, the simple gift of comfort and energy savings — best yet, it’s a gift that’ll keep on giving for up to 20 years, the estimated life span of an LED bulb.

Finding a gift for moms can be difficult. Google “Mother’s Day gifts,” and you’ll scroll through endless lists of beauty products, candles and fuzzy robes. Sure, those are sweet, but sometimes it’s fun to surprise loved ones with something a little more, well, practical!

Here’s one idea: Give her a gift certificate for a home cleaning from Well-Paid Maids. It’s the perfect “thank you,” “I love you” or “you’ve got this” for any mom. She can schedule the home cleaning at her convenience and breathe easy knowing she has one less thing to do.

Our cleaners will take care of everything, including vacuuming and mopping as well as cleaning and dusting countertops, tables, mirrors, appliances and more. Sinks, toilets, showers and appliance exteriors also get a good scrub.
