The fireworks incident at last night’s movie was terrible, and I’m glad no one was seriously hurt (and i hope that’s still true), but IMO it was just a matter of time, as uncorrected behaviors tend to escalate.
over the years, the MPD has sat by and watched people set off fireworks there and done nothing. Including when they were being shot at people on the trail. In July last year a bike cop pulled up on someone shooting fireworks down the trail, at torso height. I expected an arrest or something (lol so naive) but instead they chatted for a sec, and then the cop gave him a fist bump, and then they guy did it again, no consequences.
I don’t know what the solution is, but from experience, having the MPD there last night likely wouldn’t have prevented an incident, as they have never actually ‘policed’ fireworks in and near the park before.”
