“Dear PoPville,
Here is the latest photo of our Mabel Lee mural, located at Chinatown Gardens, 618 H Street NW — in the heart of Chinatown. It will be finished in the coming weeks, and we are excited about this beautiful and stunning public art that will honor a Chinese American suffragist, who fought for a constitutional right that she was denied.
In 1912,
at just 16 years old, Mabel Ping-Hua Lee helped lead a New York City women’s suffrage parade on horseback. But when the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920, she still could not vote — because Chinese immigrants were barred from citizenship under the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 until 1943.
This project is led by the 1882 Foundation to ensure that Chinese American history is recognized, preserved, and integrated into the American narrative of democratic ideals and civic participation. Although history forgot her, we will not.
Please see more info about our Mabel and make a donation to support here.”
