The National Portrait Gallery will celebrate art, identity and creativity with its Portraiture Festival, a daylong event for all ages centered on “The Outwin 2025: American Portraiture Today.” This exhibition is the latest installment of the museum’s Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, held every three years to showcase the next wave of contemporary portraiture by artists from across the United States.

Throughout the festival, visitors can participate in hands-on art activities, including self-portraits, memory boxes, mask making and more. The festival will also feature artist pop-ups with demonstrations in printmaking, animation-wheel projects and community quilt workshops. Guests can also join educator-led tours and spotlight talks with “The Outwin” finalists LaToya Hobbs, Sandra Bacchi and the 2025 Teen Portrait Competition winners. The festival is free, but registration is encouraged.

After the festival, visitors are invited to a performance of “Forever Is a Feeling,” a new work by the National Portrait Gallery’s resident choreographer, Diana Movius. Inspired by “The Outwin,” the performance will feature Moveius Contemporary Ballet Company and score by Max Richter. “Forever Is a Feeling” delves into the emotional and human undercurrents of the “The Outwin.” Rather than portraying specific portraits, the choreography illustrates a dialogue and explores how portraiture can preserve not just likeness but memories. The performance is free, but registration is encouraged.”
