Sometime during the week of March 3, 2019, the District Government installed a traffic island (or maybe it’s a Pedestrian island, not sure which is correct) at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Morton Street, Northwest.
No doubt this island is needed as new nearby businesses attract local residents to Georgia Avenue in numbers that significantly increase interactions between pedestrians and drivers. I don’t have any information on any incidents at this intersection or any others nearby, however, I have seen a number of instances when pedestrians attempting to cross Georgia Avenue in my neighborhood have almost been killed or severely injured by drivers that do not yield to pedestrians attempting to cross. Thanks to all who reported this horrible crash around 5pm last night:
“Entire street closed at NJ. Helmet and jacket on ground looked to be soaked in blood next to mangled bike. Horrifying. Hoping the victim is OK but I have no idea as to their condition.”
“NJ & R crash is bad. There’s a mangled bike and a garbage truck.”
“Police say the bicyclist was conscious and breathing when officers arrived and was transported to the hospital.
Police say the driver stayed on the scene after the accident.”
Updates when/if more is known on the cyclist’s condition.

A reader reports:
“I witnessed a hit and run in SE (right on the DC border) on my run home from work in Suitland today at around 6:20PM. A white utility van turning from Suitland Rd onto Southern Avenue (northbound) hit a woman while she was in the crosswalk and broke her leg. The driver fled the scene, and I waited with her till the police and paramedics arrived. Another driver said she followed the van to the Exxon at 3825 Alabama Ave SE, but he drove away again. If that’s true, the Exxon should have security footage. A side mirror on the van was damaged and fell off when it hit the woman.”
Dennis Junius reported just before 8am:
“another accident at Taylor and 13th place NE. How many more until we get a traffic pattern change or someone gets killed? Been happening for years now with no action.”
Chris Baronner also reported just before 10am:
“@kenyanmcduffie Are we going to wait until a child walking to school at 8:30 in the morning is killed at the intersection of Taylor St NE/13th Place before making 13th Pl one ways or at least a 4-way stop? @PoPville Too many accidents/way too many near misses on daily basis!”
