“Dear PoPville Readers:

I am one of the founding members of the DC Bocce League (started it way back in 2004!) and I’m curious to find out how many couples met playing in the League. We used to keep track of our “bocce couples” — players that met at bocce and eventually married — on our website.

Unfortunately as the League has grown, it’s been difficult to keep the page up to date. I’m putting out a call to your readers to find out who’s missing from this page! Add your comments to this post or send us an email at [email protected] to be included.

Full disclosure: I recently married and met my spouse playing bocce!

If you’re looking to meet area singles or just want an excuse to be social once a week, you can sign up to play in the DC Bocce League this winter. Play bocce indoors at one of these local bars:

  • Tuesdays at Shaw’s Tavern (Shaw)
  • Tuesdays at the G.O.A.T. (Arlington)
  • Wednesdays at the American Legion (Capitol Hill)
  • Thursdays at Lou’s City Bar (Columbia Heights)
  • Thursdays at Buffalo Billiards (Dupont Circle)

Use discount code COUPLES to get $20 off registration.

Readers — thanks for your help. Maybe we’ll see you at bocce this winter!

Cheers!

Sarah D.”

Break your routine. Meet other fun and interesting people. Discover a new sense of freedom and play.

Take a class at Washington Improv Theater and let yourself get away from the grind of the scripted city for a few hours a week. Classes start next week and some sections are already full!

‘Improv for all’ is our philosophy: whether you’re a nonprofit employee, a corporate lawyer, a software engineer or a high school English teacher, you’ve got something to gain from taking our Foundations of Improv class.

You don’t have to be a “funny person”—our program welcomes everyone with no prerequisites or prior experience necessary.

Our students say:

  • “An excellent opportunity to check your title and circumstance in life at the door, let loose, learn what it is to be invested in the success, and confidence of those around you. Fly that freak flag tall and proud.”
  • “You make instant friends and push yourself in ways that you might not initially believed possible.”

A unique social and creative outlet, a class at WIT spans 8 weeks with a seasoned improv instructor. Learn more about what one of WIT’s improv classes can do for you by reading what our students say and checking out our list of frequently asked questions.

Looking to check out improv from the audience? Check out a show this weekend at the WIT Road Show at DC Arts Center in Adams Morgan. Use the code POPVILLE to get tickets for just $10 each!

Be spontaneous: learn improv with WIT!

UnionKitchen and Jonas

[sponsored_by name=”DC SEU” url=”http://dcseu.com/” logo=”https://www.popville.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/DCSEU120x60.jpg” byline=”The DC SEU saves District residents energy and money through energy-efficiency and renewable energy programs.” attribution_name=”BlankSlate” attribution_url=” attribution_url=”http://blankslate.com/advertisers”]

When Cullen Gilchrest and Jonas Singer, co-owners of Union Kitchen, approached the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DC SEU), they planned to buy new appliances for the over 40 culinary entrepreneurs (TaKorean and Curbside Cupcakes, just to name a few) working out of Union Kitchen’s industrial kitchen space, but weren’t sure where to start.

“You hear about energy inefficiency, but you’re not sure about what you can do to fix it,” said Gilchrist. “DC SEU staff helped us understand how to save a lot of money and electricity.”

As DC SEU staff walked through the facility, they identified quick and easy lighting upgrades, controls to manage energy use, opportunities for operational improvement, and appliances eligible for rebates from the DC SEU. The rebate application process revealed that some equipment was inaccurately advertised as energy-efficient and DC SEU staff explained why and how Union Kitchen could get the quality of equipment they expected from vendors for future purchases. Not only did Union Kitchen receive rebates for purchasing more energy-efficient appliances, but their work with the DC SEU will help them save money and energy for years to come and create a better facility for the burgeoning businesses working there.

“The DC SEU is proud to help businesses across the District like Union Kitchen become more energy-efficient,” said Ted Trabue, Managing Director of the DC SEU. “Energy efficiency allows owners to take the money they save and invest it back in their business, which helps grow the local economy and create jobs in the District.”

For more information on how the DC SEU helps District businesses and residents save money and energy, visit www.dcseu.com.

If you’ve recently purchased a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) in DC, chances are you paid significantly less for it than you used to. What you may not know, though, is that these prices dropped thanks to the District of Columbia Sustainable Energy Utility (DC SEU).

Working with lighting manufacturers and local retailers, the DC SEU brought down the cost of CFLs significantly, from an average of $8 to as low as $0.99. Starting in July, some stores began offering LEDs at reduced prices as well, making the typically costlier LED technology much more affordable. With participating stores in every ward, including a number of locally-owned businesses, now is a great time to upgrade to save energy, reduce your electric bill, and improve the quality of lighting in your home.

“We’re proud to be working with over 50 retailers throughout the District to reduce the cost of energy-efficient lighting for residents,” said Ted Trabue, Managing Director of the DC SEU. “It’s just one part of the work we do in our commitment to saving Washingtonians money, providing DC residents green jobs, and building a cleaner, brighter energy future for the city.”

Beyond lighting, the DC SEU offers residents a number of ways to save. Right now, they are offering $50 rebates on the purchase of ENERGY STAR® clothes washers and refrigerators, as well as rebates of up to $850 on the purchase and installation of gas water heaters, furnaces, and boilers. Homeowners who are unsure of where to start can contact the DC SEU. They’ll match you with a qualified contractor who will perform an audit to identify improvements—air sealing and insulation, for example— that will save energy and improve the comfort of your home year-round.

To find out more about the DC SEU, including where you can purchase reduced-price CFLs and LEDs, visit www.dcseu.com or contact the DC SEU at 202-479-2222 or [email protected].

The DC Sustainable Energy Utility is a project of the Sustainable Energy Partnership under contract to the District Department of the Environment (DDOE).

Just about everyone is familiar with Mount Vernon and Bloomingdale neighborhoods these days, although have you really had a chance to explore some of the great real estate opportunities around and about these NW places?

Across Bloomingdale you are struck by the laid back pace of things while hanging out at Big Bear Cafe and then wondering over to the Farmers Market to grab some farm fresh produce. Well that is Bloomingdale and with so many great Victorian style buildings (now condos) in the area it reminds you of what things might have been like a century ago.

As for Mount Vernon Square, one of the communities which has undergone a fairly dramatic transformation with the revitalized convention center district in the middle, a surge in amenities has made its way across the community with new bars and cafes lining themselves up on either side of the convention center.

The tours are a great way to see a cross-section of the condo options available in each neighborhood, as well as getting a feel for the neighborhoods themselves. Both tours are free and there is no required commitment, which means attendees can just relax, ask questions, and learn.

The Green DC Realty Team will be holding condo tours in each of the neighborhoods at 11am and 1pm ( both tours will be held twice ).

“The goal is to provide folks on the tour an easy, valuable way to get to know the real estate of a neighborhood but without the usual pressure to buy a home,” said Green DC Realty’s Mike Kiefer. This weekend’s tours are part of a weekly series. Email Mike to learn what neighborhoods future tours will feature.

Here are the details:
