14th and Park Road, NW

From MPD:

“The 4th District continues to work on issues of concerns, namely prostitution on and around the 14th St corridor between Park Road N.W. and Spring Road N.W.

I would like to report that 7 recent arrests for prostitution were made in the area as a result of a focused effort.

These arrests were result of the concerns the community voiced and the information they provided in reference to prostitution and human trafficking as a whole.”

This morning a resident wrote on the MPD3D listserv:

“Prostitution on 12th Street NW between Massachusetts and N Street is getting completely out of control. Yesterday, I counted four prostitutes in the area while walking to work and today there were five. It is a real eye opener to see residents walking their dogs or taking their kids to school while maneuvering around hookers, pimps and vehicles pulling over to negotiate, while the whole area reeks of marijuana. When people complain, there is a noticeable police presence in the area, so they move one street over for a night or two. This problem obviously is not going to go away on its own or with what is currently being done by the police, in fact it has gotten much worse over the last few months. Please address this problem with more resources and/or a different strategy as it is decreasing the quality of life and endangering residents in this area.”

From MPD:

“The 4th District continues to work on issues of concern in the Petworth neighborhood and would like to report 7 recent arrests for prostitution in conjunction with a focused operation in that area. Ed. Note: I think it’s just a shortcut to the construction site staging area on Piney Branch. Or is it something more nefarious?

“Dear PoPville,

Just moved to the bottom of the hill on 14th and Taylor. Been seeing TONS of men go in and out of the woods off of Piney Branch where Rock Creek, Taylor, Arkansas all converge.

Not sure what they’re doing, doesn’t ever seem sexual or violent. Hated to do this, but called the cops when I saw one (when he was solo) looking through my bathroom window from down below in the woods.

Just now, I saw three men coming out of the woods from the same spot in my back alley off of Shepard.

What is this? Drugs? Prostitution ring? Homelessness? Mental illness?”

From MPD:

“On October 25, 2017, members of the Narcotics and Special Investigations Division’s Human Trafficking Unit and the First District’s Crime Suppression Team conducted Prostitution Enforcement along the K Street NE corridor. The operation resulted in two (2) arrests for Solicitation of Prostitution. This operation is part of an on-going effort in the NOMA area.”

Ed. Note: Earlier this month we learned that “Councilmember David Grosso (I-At Large) announced the introduction of legislation to improve community health and safety through a new approach that removes criminal penalties for those engaged in consensual sexual exchange.”
