Thanks to Andrew for sending from NoMa.

Our first sighting of the imaging balloon was back in October 2009. Last year we learned “The balloon was launched by Digital Design and Imaging Inc. to take aerial photos of the District’s skyline as part of the joint Height Master Plan the DC Office of Planning and the National Capital Planning Commission are conducting in response to a Congressional request.”

Though I wonder if the explanation is still accurate. Why is the survey taking so long or maybe this is a new survey?

Yesterday afternoon near Metro Center Courtenay spotted “this strange balloon floating over DC.”

Be not alarmed and for God’s sake somebody please tell POTUS, this is simply our friends from Air Photos Live balloon who seem to be spotted every year or so. You can see a closeup shot from a previous sighting here.

Update: Molly confirms “Yep, spotted off Thomas Circle.”

“@PoPville yo, what’s flying around K and 6th NW right now? Looks like maybe a camera attached to that bubble.”

‏@_TheHMS tweets us last night:

“@PoPville What’s the huge balloon looming in #navyyard? It seems to have landed on #mcdonalds on #southcapitol”

This is very likely the balloon from Air Photos Live, a “Digital Design & Imaging Service” last spotted in March. You can read some background on them after previous sightings here.

Of course it could just be a promotion for Jurassic World/hamburglar water glasses that deflated…

From WMATA:

“Welcome news for customers who ride the Blue, Orange and Silver lines. As of Aug 1, trains will arrive every 15 minutes on weekdays, matching service on the Green and Yellow lines. For most customers, the wait for a train will be no longer than 5-8 minutes, as most stations are served by at least two if not all three lines. Read More

“Dear PoPville,

but every night between 9:30-10pm for the past couple of weeks, there is a bright white light in the sky over upper NW DC (likely near / above the National Cathedral). But it’s high up!!! So I’m not sure if it’s a helicopter… and then after a while, it’s gone! It’s definitely bigger and brighter than a star. What is it?!? Who’s watching us?!? PS: It stays stationary in the exact same spot for at least half hour… and then it quickly disappears!!!”

Ed. Note: I thought it might be the oft reported imaging balloon but we’ve never had a night reporting before. Any ideas?
