Woodridge (not to be confused with its VA counterpart WoodBRIDGE) is a neighborhood that doesn’t get much attention as a DC destination. The unassuming residential vibe of the neighborhood is one of the features that attracts residents to the quiet tree lined streets and numerous parks.

Location: Northeast DC, along the Maryland border of Eastern Ave, west of Brookland with Rhode Island Ave running through the middle.

Why it’s great:

  • Single family homes, with yards, and alleys = the best of both urban/suburban living
  • 5 miles from downtown!
  • Barnard Hill Park: one of the lesser known Fort Circle parks, while it lacks a website you can’t miss the large grassy expanse.
  • DC Brau: DC’s first craft brewery which recently celebrated it’s 5 year anniversary
  • Community centric, spirit of neighbors helping neighbors. Check out Good Food Markets from Oasis Community Partners, helping to minimize inequalities in access to food.
  • Home to one of the few DC Rita’s water ice locations

woodridge

If you told me ten years ago…

True story – I had friends who lived in Woodridge years ago must’ve been around 2005 and I went to their house for a BBQ. It was around 22nd Street, NE. So I figured, I’d just walk to Rhode Island and catch a cab when I was ready to go. This was before Lyft and Uber. So it’s relatively early like maybe 8 or 9pm. I walk to Rhode Island Ave and there are zero cabs. A big old goose egg. OK, I’m a walker (I walked to the BBQ but knew walking all the way home wasn’t a great option), so I figure what the hell I’ll just walk until I see a cab. hahaha It’s easy to forget the former cab dead-zones. There were many. It used to be impossible to catch a cab at Wonderland if you can believe that. Anyway, I get about 1 block on Rhode Island and this lady who must’ve been 70 years old or so makes a beeline straight towards me and says – “where are you going?” I say, I’m walking towards the metro and trying to catch a cab. She says “oh no you’re not.” She physically grabs me and walks to the bus stop and waits with me and RIDES WITH ME to the metro (I think it was Brookland) to make sure I got there OK. I’ll never forget that night. That by the by, is a very good example for those who ask me about the meaning of the beautiful life.

Anyway, enough about me, check out this listing I spotted while looking for today’s GDoN:

“Rare Opportunity in Hot Woodridge! Large Luxurious Custom Home awaits. Chef’s kitchen w/ Viking Pro cooking appliances and built in banquette. Huge Dramatic master suite*Home Theater*Remote A/V control*5 Bedroom suites with full baths*Elevator shaft-potential for disability access*Imagine Enjoying Spring days on rear deck*blocks from new Shops at Dakota Crossing Town Center”

More photos here.

This house at 2921 26th Street, NE is going for $1,299,999.

I can imagine what my guardian would have to say about this…

Year to date, the median settled price for a home in DC is $540,000. (current national median home price is $244,100.) That DC median price includes rowhomes, detached homes, condos, and co-ops. The current median price for detached homes in the District of Columbia is $930,962.

That said, it is surprising that this relatively modestly priced detached single family home defied GDoN commenters’ expectations of selling the first week on the market. (more…)

dog

“We found a dog walking in the woodridge/brookland area. We have it in our backyard until the humane society arrives. The dog is very sweet. We provided food and water.

Update: The Washington Humane Society just came by to pick her up. I wish I had more time to wait before someone would reply to the post, but we have a dog in the house already.”

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“Signage and building permits for a new restaurant, across the street from Nido.”

Back in 2013 RIA Insider posted:

“The theme of the restaurant will be “Food for Thought” and will feature American style cuisine, using local and fresh ingredients, that Nina describes as “healthy dining” with made from scratch foods…they are currently working on the menu, which will contain several signature dishes including gluten-free and vegetarian options.”

Updates when they get closer to opening.

A reader wrote around 6:30pm last night:

“The police blocked off the grassy area between the bus bay and 10th street, and areas are roped off with crime scene tape.”

WUSA9 reported:

“According to Metro Transit police, the boy was stabbed in the torso just before 5 p.m. on the sidewalk near the bus bay outside the station.”

The also report a 17 year old was arrested.

From @DCPoliceDept just before midnight:

“Shooting @ 2339hrs 18th ST NE/Rhode Island Ave LOF 2 B/M 25/35 Y/O 5’6 WHITE T JEANS MULTI COLORD HAT W/ GUN 2ND B/M BLK JEANS BLK T/7160″

From GW Public Safety around 3:30am:

MPD shots fired incident. Two suspects in custody

“At approximately 3:30 a.m., the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) notified the George Washington University Police Department (GWPD) of an attempted carjacking in progress off-campus and that officers were chasing a suspect in the direction of GW’s campus. While still off-campus, MPD officers in pursuit fired in the direction of the fleeing suspects. While this incident was unfolding, a resident student called to alert GWPD of a suspicious person hiding near Munson Hall, located at 2212 I Street. GWPD relayed this information to MPD and in turn captured the suspect.

There is continued police presence along the I Street corridor between the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro station and 2000 Pennsylvania Avenue and along 23rd street while MPD finalizes its investigation. There may be some residual police activity that continues into the mid-morning.

Campus safety is a community responsibility, and we thank our community member for her awareness and actions, which led MPD to be able to make a quick arrest. Call GWPD at 202-994-6111 if you need assistance or notice anything unusual or suspicious.”
