Most of these photos are from the early 1900s, certainly pre-WWI. The little book I have dates from about 1910, so I think the school opened around 1905 and closed just before WWI. My g-grandfather, the Rev. Flournoy Menefee, purchased the mansion (which I believe was a hotel at the time) and converted it to the Washington College for Ladies (see ad).

He had previously been the president of a woman’s college in Liberty, Missouri. My grandmother and her siblings grew up in the manor with chefs, servants, gardeners, and other employees. (more…)

Thanks to Peter for passing on: “Brooklyn Boulders just sold their brand new Eckington bouldering gym to Bouldering Project. they also sold their Boston and Brooklyn gyms.”

The press release says:

“As of today, the Bouldering Project has acquired our three Brooklyn Boulders locations in Brooklyn, D.C., and Boston. And while that means you may see some new signage in your facility, you’ll continue to experience the best-in-class climbing experience you’ve come to expect from us. You’ll also continue to see many of the friendly faces from the Brooklyn Boulders team.

Much like BKB, the Bouldering Project strives to create spaces where all individuals can feel a sense of belonging in our sport and culture. (more…)

“metrobar’s Inaugural Holiday Art Fair – this Sunday 1pm”

“A lineup of emerging and established artists, photographers and authors will present their work Sunday afternoon at metrobar‘s inaugural Holiday Art Fair, which will include an art sale, photography exhibit and live music.

Artists from the Artbae and BlkArthouse will be selling their work at the outdoor venue, 640 Rhode Island Avenue NE. Artbae is a collective of DC-area artists who build awareness for activism and social change through arts-centered programming initiatives. BlkArthouse is a DC-based organization that represents emerging Black artists and is dedicated to increasing access and representation throughout the art world. The Holiday Art Fair runs from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

MPD looking for Suspects on a Motorcycle “engaging in unwanted sexual contact”

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and locating suspects in connection with Misdemeanor Sexual Abuse offenses that occurred in the Third and Fifth Districts.

· On Thursday, November 4, 2021, at approximately 6:15 pm, the suspects, who were on a motorcycle, approached the victim in the 400 block of T Street, Northeast. (more…)
