“Dear PoPville,

Wondering if you have any info on this…Rhode Island Ave, between 17th St and Connecticut Ave, was completely shut down Sunday morning. This is the same block as St. Matthews Cathedral. Tons of yellow police tape blocking the entire street, cop cars, 2 firetrucks, a couple ambulances. Police standing around the intersections. They couldn’t say what it was about. Unclear if there was a crime or if there was a VIP around.”

From MPD:

“Shortly before 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) members assigned to a detail for the Red Mass at Saint Matthew’s Cathedral engaged an individual who set up a tent on the steps of the Cathedral. From ABCA:

“On September 10, 2025, the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA) and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) shut down two businesses for illegal cannabis sales.

The Closure Orders were executed at Chocolate City Wellness, a licensed retailer, and Citgo Gas Station, an unlicensed retailer, due to activities that posed an imminent danger to public health and safety, specifically the sale of illegal cannabis products that were untested by a licensed testing laboratory and lacked the required labeling.

The operation was part of the city’s ongoing enforcement efforts following the enactment of the Medical Cannabis Conditional License and Unlicensed Establishment Closure Clarification Emergency Amendment Act of 2024, which granted ABCA new civil enforcement powers. Since the bill took effect on July 15, 2024, joint agency efforts have resulted in the padlocking of 71 illegal cannabis businesses.
