RIP

From DC9:

“The Holidays are about giving and celebrating. They are about overindulgence and spending time with friends both new and old.

In that spirit DC9 is bringing back to life the much lauded Palena Burger!

It’s been five years since the acclaimed Palena closed its doors and the beloved burger graced the tables of DC dinners, and we miss it. Amber Bursik, chef at DC9, whom cooked at Palena for several years and cooked many of those Palena burgers herself thought this was the way she and DC9 could spread some holiday cheer to their guests. Oof, this one hurts. Thanks to Katie (and all who messaged) for the heads up this morning: “the neighborhood favorite corner spot bar, Commodore Public House and Kitchen, will be closing next week.”

The Commodore opened up in the former Veranda space back in 2016.

From The Commodore:

“To all of our staff, regulars and irregulars,

It is with great sadness that we send this note out to everyone. Unfortunately, we were not able to come to a lease extension agreement with our landlord and we have to hang up the old Diver helmet. (more…)

From a press release:

“Chef Alfredo Solis opens his newest venture, Anafre on Friday, November 22.

An anafre, meaning “portable oven” in Spanish, is traditionally a clay pot that has an opening in the bottom where hot coals are placed that then heat up the dish on top of the pot. The restaurant is an ode to Chef Solis’ mother who grew up on the Mexican countryside where she was tasked with cooking for the family. Since they lived without gas or electric, the anafre was their only stove. This style of cooking is interpreted in an open kitchen where most items will be prepared on over charcoal. (more…)

Thanks to all who passed on from Whaley’s:

“We are excited to share that we are passing the reins at Whaley’s to our good friends and chefs Gerald Addison and Chris Morgan, who are embarking on their first solo project after leaving critically acclaimed Maydan.

Not many folks know how our story in this business began, but Dave and Nick worked a decade ago to help begin development in The Yard’s neighborhood. And years later, they were lucky enough to open Whaley’s, their own place dedicated to our region’s rich seafood culture.

Dave and Nick are so proud of the team who worked tirelessly to create Whaley’s since the doors opened in May 2016. There are too many people to name individually but we’re proud and grateful that so many have been with us since day one. They are the lifeblood of the restaurant. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking by the public house on my walk home from work, and saw a sign where the Chick-fil-A was supposed to be that said it was going to be a bank. I can’t tell if that was a joke or not though. Have you heard anything about this? I haven’t seen anything since you posted about it last November so I’m wondering if it did end up becoming a bank.”

It is no joke! But the bank is coming one storefront down to the former Little Beet space: (more…)

Thanks to Valerie for sending: “Buffalo & Bergen’s Capitol Hill location has a sign! Any idea when it’s opening? The sign actually went up about a week ago.”

Almost exactly a year ago we learned that:

Buffalo & Bergen, the Union Market maker of knishes, bagels and cocktails, has a liquor license public hearing notice in the window of the (downstairs) former home of Bagels & Baguettes at 3rd and Mass NE.”

A taste of what to look forward to: (more…)
