Some people are going to hate me for writing about this but hell if it’s on Yelp then I figure I can share it with y’all as well. So 6 weeks ago a new Cocktail Lounge opened up at 2009 14th St NW right next to Marvin. There is no signage at all so just look for the buzzer or a gentleman standing out front. I’d have never of known about it if a friend of mine didn’t recommend it for drinks on Friday so I walked past it tonight. Lots of positive talk over at Yelp. Here are some samples:

“I let the cat out of the bag……
But I just had to share with my fellow Yelpers!

I just wanted to let you know that The Gibson has become more wonderful with time!

After many a night introducing my friends to a great cocktail and a place where we can hear each other and enjoy each others company everyone agrees hands down the best place in the city to hang out with friends and have a drink.”

“The protective metal grate on the only street facing window is permanently drawn, so there is no indication of the lounge from the street. The transformation wrought on the other side of the metal grate by the new owners simply astounds. Upon pressing the buzzer, a dapper and smiling gentlemen in a lovely tweed suit asks for the number in your party. If there is room to sit at the bar or a banquet, he escorts you inside and it’s time to begin. There’s a wide array of thoughtfully created cocktails to choose from; I opted for a whiskey and absinthe concoction. My friend ordered a wine. The bartender is extremely gracious and friendly.”

“I was tempted to write a less than 5-Star review, only because this place makes you leave after an hour and a half. It’s like getting kicked out of the Garden of Eden except the bouncer has a clipboard and not a flaming sword.”

There are some things that go in the world of single people that probably happen frequently, and no one has coined a term for it. The couch creep is a term I came up with for something that has happened to me a few times, and I’m sure it’s happened to you too.

The couch creep occurs when two people are (obviously) on a couch hanging out. At first, they are sitting a socially acceptable distance a part. Then, next thing you know, the other party is right next to you, uncomfortably close to you, and they have literally crept over without your notice.

This has happened to me watching a movie with a guy friend, who appeared to have other ideas, and in a small group situation at dinner parties. In every occurrence it has been with men where I think it is a friendly situation, but they appear to think it is something different. I guess in different circumstances, this would not be considered a creep, but a welcome movement closer.

This can also apply to other situations. I constantly tell my coworker that he is chair creeping me when he moves away from his desk, and backs up towards me.

Food for thought….

Any other folks experience “Couch Creep”?

CocoLibre is the new coffee/tea/chocolate spot that replaced Nani Kafe at Harvard and Sherman. In addition to providing another option for loose tea for sale they now also offer Wifi. I thought this was one of the problems with Nani Kafe – while the coffee was great there was no Wifi.

The owner writes:

“Okay. The Wifi is up now. Some come all ye free internet users. And be sure to buy something, too!”

There is something about these scenes. Every time I pass them playing it makes me smile. I’d say it contributes greatly to the beautiful life.

Looks like the mosaic/mural at the Rosario Charter School at 11th Street and Harvard got a touch up. If you walk up close, some of the faces are mesmerizing.

More photos after the jump. (more…)

Dang, this one had sweet old door knobs as well but it got a bit obscured by the metal gate. Well, the door itself is still pretty fresh.

This is one of my all time favorites. The odd thing about this house, that you could never tell from the photo, is that it is practically spitting distance from busy Wisconsin Avenue. Looks like it could be in the middle of Vermont somewhere.

I dig these brick sidewalks but seem to recall folks saying they were hard to maintain. I also recall a photo I took of some weeds growing out of the cracks of a brick sidewalk this past Summer. Is the sand supposed to prevent that or does it just make the walk even? Also if this is more expensive than regular concrete sidewalks who pays for it? So any fans of brick sidewalks out there?
