Glögg is a Nordic mulled wine that’s traditionally served at Christmastime. (It’s kinda like a hot, spiced sangria.) The best thing about it is you can make a big batch and enjoy it for a few days — it tastes even better after a day or two. Also, it smells absolutely delicious when it’s simmering on the stove. If you’re making it for a party you can serve it in a crockpot.

There are a lot of variations on this recipe, but here’s the version that I made a few days ago. I bought all of the ingredients at Safeway (cardamom seeds are on sale this week). There’s no need to spend money on fancy wine, just something halfway decent will work fine.

Glögg

1 large bottle of inexpensive Burgundy wine (1.5 liters)
1 cup of sugar (to taste)
1 cup of raisins
2 cinnamon sticks
2 tablespoon of cardamom seeds
1 teaspoon of whole cloves
4 coins of fresh ginger
peel of lemon
peel of orange
vodka (to taste)

In a large stock pot, combine all the ingredients except the vodka. Heat slowly, until the drink is steaming hot. Stir and taste every now and then. Don’t let it boil, just keep it on a low simmer for 2-3 hours. Before serving, add vodka if you wish. The drink is even better if it’s made a few days in advance.

A printable version of the recipe can be found here.

Red Velvet Cupcakery and Tangy Sweet Frozen Yogurt are located right next to one another on 7th Street just north of E Street. I spoke briefly with Tangy Sweet owner Aaron Gordon who mentioned that his sister, Canada Gordon, actually owns Red Velvet. The cupcake pastry chef is David Guas who was selected as pastry chef of the year in 2004 by the restaurant association of Metropolitan Washington. There’s a lot more info on Web site.

Some of you may be familiar with Tangy Sweet’s Dupont Circle location. For fans of their frozen yogurt – to celebrate the Penn Quarter grand opening on Tuesday there will be free frozen yogurt and toppings from 4-8pm Tuesday, Dec. 23rd!

Entertainment is a tricky area to be thrifty in. A night out on the town always involves some form of spending. Here are some of my ideas for fun activities that are free or inexpensive.

  1. Movie Nights. With Netflix and the Red Box at Giant, there are numerous inexpensive ways to rent DVDs. Grab a movie, invite friends over, and have a movie night.
  2. Beer/Wine Tasting Event. Similar to a potluck, invite a bunch of friends for a beer or wine tasting. Have everyone bring a different type of beer or wine. As the host, provide note cards so people can write about what they like, and provide a few snacks.
  3. Game Night. My friends and I do these, and they are always a lot of fun. You actually don’t even need to buy games to host a game night. My friends just did one where they did Pictionary with a white board. Everyone wrote down something to draw on a piece of paper and put it in a hat. People then chose a slip out of the hat and drew it on the white board. I missed out on the event because I was sick, but apparently it was pretty hilarious with the ideas people contributed and the drawings they attempted. Other game favorites are cards, Apples to Apples, Catchphrase and Jenga. Continues after the jump. (more…)

This is another spot being developed by the Donatelli group. It looks like they may be getting ready to assemble a crane or some sort of scaffolding. Any one know what that is in the middle of the photo? This spot is set to be a small condo building.

Mad presence out at 7th and Taylor. I chatted with the cops, a bit, who were super nice and friendly. I still have to wonder if this is the best use of MPD resources. It seemed like they were mostly just checking to see if folks were wearing their seatbelts. I don’t know about you but I’d rather split these folks up and have them distributed on patrols throughout neighborhoods with trouble spots – especially in the evenings instead of the daytime. But I do have to emphasize that the cops standing out there in the freezing weather were super nice. I just wish they were used a bit more thoughtfully.
