“From my office window on 14th Street taken 3:30 this afternoon. The building next door caught on fire for the 4th time in about a month. It’s the Perseus development project at the old Bowen YMCA; people keep breaking in and setting fires.”

Shawarma Spot has opened up at 2418 18th Street in Adams Morgan. So within two weeks time we’ve had two new shawarma spaces open up in Adams Morgan. Last week I wrote about Shawarma King opening up on Columbia Road. So I have a bit of a problem. I’m a huge fan of Shawarma King on Columbia Road but I want to be fair to Shawarma Spot on 18th Street, so I’m proposing a shawarma taste off. I can’t participate because the owners know me and I don’t want any special treatment. So this is where I need some volunteers. I need some folks who love shawarma to volunteer to choose a weekend and on a Sat. go to one place and on Sunday go to the other. I’ll report on your findings. Any takers? Free Pop T-shirts for the first three volunteers.

“DCPL seeks citywide nominations for threatened buildings, landmarks, landscapes, etc.
If you want to know more about the Most Endangered Places program, feel free to visit our website at www.dcpreservation.org. There, you can download an application and look at lists from former years.”

Here is a list of most endangered places from 2008.

Seems like a great program. Anyone have any recommendations?

I happen to think this house if dope sky.  It is also in a phenomenal location.  Do you think it can go for $899,000?  What do you think of the house itself?

“Dear PoP,

I wanted to suggest a dumpy little restaurant that I enjoy as it seems that you have been previewing a fair amount of them lately. I really like El Reconcito Deportivo, a little Mexican/Salvadorian hole-in-the-wall on 11th Street right next to Bloombars. I live nearby and try to stop in there a few times a month. There are a few women who work there, and although I don’t know their names, there is a little bit older woman who works there midday and now that she knows me she treats me like gold, even letting me sample different items on the menu and even sneaking me little samples of other patron’s meals! I assume the food is akin to having somebody whipping up something in a Hispanic household…I would much rather have their tacos and burritos than hitting up one of the chain joints and the other things I have had (steak and eggs, breaded chicken, seafood soup) were also tasty. When talking with the owner, I was a little surprised when she told me when the restaurant had been opened for 11 years and…they live on 11th street just a block south of the restaurant so they are definitely a local business!”

I had written a small post back in Aug. 2007 but I’m curious to know if there are other fans out there? I really enjoy the atmosphere. They are definitely part of what makes that stretch of 11th Street great. So who digs the food? Any items you particularly recommend?

My senior year of college I went through a phase where I put hot sauce on just about everything I ate. However, due in part to my unsophisticated palate and in part to the unsophisticated grocery selection of Harrisonburg, VA, my love affair with hot sauce was pretty much limited to Tabasco. It was not until I relocated to DC that I realized there was a whole world of hot sauce to explore.

Last week after brunch with a friend, as we were walking up 18th Street, a familiar sign caught my eye. I’ve often wondered what ever happened to the hot sauce heaven that was Uncle Brutha’s Hot Sauce Emporium, formerly of Eastern Market. So I was pretty excited to see that they seemed to have relocated right into my own ‘hood! It turns out I had jumped the gun a bit and the set up was only temporary, but I’ll get to that in a minute.

I dragged my friend inside and we were lucky enough to meet Brennan Proctor, Mr. Uncle Brutha himself! Brennan is a 4th generation DC native, which is something of a rarity these days. He established Uncle Brutha’s in 2003, born out of his love for cooking and homage to his great granduncle George “Brutha” Hubbud, who, as family folklore states, came across the now-famous chilies used in the sauce while working as a Pullman Porter on the (Ed. note: there is some confusion as to whether there is an Underground Railroad connection.) Railroad.

Brennan began selling his multiple award winning hot sauce in 2004 as a vendor at Eastern Market. A short while later he opened a store on 7th Street SE, right outside the market. After the fire in April 2007 business began to drop and he just couldn’t afford to keep the place running. So unfortunately Uncle Brutha’s had to close its doors, but he continued to sell online and was most recently able to arrange the space on 1831 18th Street as a temporary lease from the owner of Sun Spectacles for the month of December. He is currently scoping out some more permanent locations, and one of them is right in our backyard! Brennan says he’s been looking at the retail spots in the first floor of the Park Place condos going up above the Petworth Metro. He’s still working out the details, but I have my fingers crossed!

In the meantime, Brennan will continue to sell his products, along with many others, through his website www.unclebrutha.com. The online selection is limited only to the Uncle Brutha brand sauces, but in the store he sells a wide variety of hot sauce, bbq sauce, spice rubs and marinades. There was also an entire shelf dedicated to Brennan’s nephew Ryan Neel’s new business venture, Icons, a t-shirt company. Hopefully all of this and more will make its way to the new permanent location. Brennan also is working on renewing a deal to make his products available at Whole Foods. Continues after the jump. (more…)

Over the weekend the Post wrote an article titled: Petworth Pizzeria Fills a Void Tastefully. I went to grab a pie this weekend and congratulate Jose on the nice article when he told me about his window getting smashed. He seemed to have good spirits (even showing me the above photo that his friend took of him). But still this is so frustrating. Someone finally opens up a great spot on Georgia Avenue and has to deal with this bull shit. Cause it was pure vandalism not even a burglary (thankfully). It just really pisses me off that here the guy gets some good news and that very evening his window gets smashed. It’s not fair. Life’s not fair I guess. Well, it’s gonna cost a lot of money to replace so if anyone is hankering for pizza this week make the effort to support Moronis located at 4811 Georgia Ave. And of course the pizza is phenomenal so everyone wins!

I noticed a number of these signs all over Adams Morgan. It struck me right away for two reasons. First, I thought it was really unusual to see drawings instead of photos. But second, which may explain the drawings, the murder took place in 1968. It seems pretty random to see signs like this for such an old murder case. But it’s legit because it’s listed on the DC MPD’s Web site. Anyone ever see a sign like this before?
